@ProPublica Weaponizing "forgiveness" to silence victims is a classic mechanism of institutional abuse cover-ups. A fascinating article about how a group of journalists working for the Hungary state news agency quietly documented all the ways the news was manipulated under the Orbán regime. They have now released a detailed report.
Among many things, this is a terrific example of resistance during the rule of authoritarian regimes. Document, document, document the abuses because one day the sun will shine and the truth can be revealed.

HotType by Jeff Jarvis Is Out August 20th!
The book HotType by Jeff Jarvis is out on the 20th of August and I can’t wait to get my hands on it.
I’m a big fan of Jeff’s books and have read, I think, all of them.
I first heard of Jeff when he joined the TWiT network to be on the This Week In Google podcast (now Intelligent Machines).
The guy is so smart and a prolific writer. His blog, BuzzMachine, is also a great read!
Jeff a seasoned journalist and college educator. If you get a chance to pre-order the book HotType, you should. Find out more at JeffJarvis.com.

1. 420 Court’s Façade Takes Shape in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn (Michael Young and Matt Pruznick for New York YIMBY. April 13, 2026.)
Carroll Gardens is next to Cobble Hill, which is one of Brooklyn’s historic districts. The line between Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill is easy to miss. Yet, as I noted in 2020, Carroll Gardens is not a historic district. With that in mind, this new construction is not bad.
2. Placard Abuse Clogs Downtown Brooklyn Bike Lane (Brooklyn Today. April 13, 2026.)
Placard abuse is a well-known problem. But must everything be about the struggles of bikers? The bikers in the area behave terribly even where the bike lanes are unimpeded.

5. ProPublica journalists walk off the job in first U.S. newsroom strike over AI (Andrew Deck for NiemanLab. April 9, 2026.)
I reached the “choose your fighter” screen between ProPublica and big AI. Then I left the game on and went for a walk.
6. Doki Doki Literature Club Removed from Google Play Store Following Policy Violation or Is This Just Another Attempt by Monika for Our Attention? (It’s Not, They Really Delisted It) (Azario Lopez for Noisy Pixel. April 9, 2026.)
While I never “reviewed” Doki Doki Literature Club, I referenced it in my review of a freeware visual novel called Save the Date in expressing my hope that Save the Date would be published on Steam, Itch, and other places where more people could find it. I never played the “paid” version of Doki Doki Literature Club, but from my knowledge of the free version, this decision strikes me as odd. It certainly deserves an “M” rating (which I presumre age-gates downloads/purchases) but I am sure there is more objectionable “content” on Google Play Store. Of course, I use F-Droid, so what do I know?
7. The Death of the Small Point Guard? (James Barlowe. April 10, 2026.)
Is there really a “death”? How many instances in NBA history have we had where the undisputed best player on a championship team was a “small” point guard? Off the top of my head: 2014-15 and 2022-23 Golden State Warriors (Stephen Curry), 1988-89 and 89-90 Detroit Pistons (Isiah Thomas), and 1972-73 New York Knicks (Walt Frazier). You could argue for a few additional cases in the 1950-51 Rochester Royals (Bob Davies), 1969-70 Knicks (Frazier). 2003-04 Pistons (Chauncey Billups), and 2016-17 and 2017-18 Warriors (Curry). I suppose one could try to include Dennis Johnson since he was “small” and add the 1978-79 Seattle SuperSonics? But if this is all we can come up with, it does not seem like building a team “around” a small point guard has ever been the best path to an NBA championship.

Just watched @mariaressa.bsky.social’s powerful speech on how decentralization of information is essential to preserving democracy and the rule of law. 💡
This is a must-watch for anyone who cares about the future of journalism, free speech, and digital rights:
🎥 Maria Ressa at WJF2025 https://youtu.be/3cqQn4d79KE
What stood out to me: Centralized platforms are inherently at odds with democratic values. While Bluesky is a step up from Twitter, the real heroes are those already in the #Fediverse—you’re building the future we need! 👏
Maria’s argument that decentralized, open systems are the only way to safeguard truth feels more urgent than ever. If the internet is controlled by a few corporations, how can we trust the information shaping our democracies?
The #Fediverse—of which #Mastodon is a part—is fully free and open-source, as beautifully explained by @_elena in this video:
🎥 About the Fediverse: https://youtu.be/YRJHIJy5Nno
To those already here: THANK YOU for being part of this movement! 🙌 Now, let’s spread the word—invite others to join the Fediverse. Here are some instances to share:

Remember: Anyone can host their own server—that’s the power of decentralization! It’s resistant to censorship in ways even Bluesky can’t match.
For a deeper dive into how decentralization fights censorship, read Cory Doctorow’s excellent piece:

Maria Ressa’s fight against Duterte’s regime shows change is possible. Her appearance on The Daily Show connects the dots between platform monopolies, misinformation, and democracy’s erosion—and offers hope:

To those already in the Fediverse: You’re the backbone of a free and open internet. What’s one step you’re taking to grow this community? (For me, Using Mastodon nearly dally and it’s sharing technical knowledge with those who need it.)
Let’s keep building a web that’s ours—one that resists tyranny and protects democracy. 💪

Senior Israel Hayom editor celebrates report of 100,000 Gaza deaths
Eli Barak, a senior editor at Israel Hayom (owned by Miriam Adelson) newspaper, responded “Thank you for the good news” to a #Haaretz report estimating 100,000 deaths in #Gaza. When questioned, Barak compared Palestinians in Gaza to Germans in WWII, saying he would have been happy about high mortality in German cities in 1943. The journalist describes himself as head of the news desk at Israel Hayom and deputy editor of Israel Hashavua supplement. Israel Hayom declined to condemn the statement, calling it a “private statement on social media.”

Fair warning:
if you push any kind of apologies for news media either mainstream or self-appointed as "independent", you're catching a mute or worse.
I've lived my entire life in #Argentina and was forced to watch them carry water for a military dictatorship and three neoliberal/conservative/borderline-fascist governments.
And spread misinformation because they couldn't be bothered to do better and after all it's just entertainment.
And run DISinformation campaigns for various special interests.
I learned to hate their unprofessional attitude, their self-congratulation and their whining against "censorship" long before I came of age.

I've proud to have been part of the fediverse since before we had a cool word for it.

This thread from Twitter prompted this rant (very long... sorry) on a potential solution for media in terms of how they are funded. The pay-per-article model, despite being tested over the past decade, has not taken off. I'll give my view on why that is later in this thread, but new models of journalism and new social media technologies can provide hope.

This is probably the best piece I've ever read on how journalists have reported on long covid, and how their reports has affected the lives of people living with long covid.
Don't pass this piece up.
' We [journalists] are not neutral actors, reporting on the world at a remove; we also create that world through our choices, and we must do so with purpose, care and compassion. '

Hi liebes Fediverse 👋

I fight for the users.
I love programming and thinking and talking about thinking. I have an education (BS, MS, PhD) focused on artificial intelligence and neuroscience.
I'm an advocate of the public academic pursuit of knowledge, the scientific process, peer review, and I see open source software and hardware as an essential part of the scientific process.
I see software user rights, including security and privacy, to be protected mainly by free open source software, specifically software with a copyleft license, i.e. GPL or Mozilla.
I see the democratizing effects of the Internet, including distributed journalism and social networking, to be largely the effect of the collaborative development of free and open source software.
I am interested in free and open source manufacturing, including open source 3D printers and CNC machines. I believe open source manufacturing will be important for distributed manufacturing, allowing local manufacturing and local labor.
I see worker-owned coops as the way to safely transition from a non-democratic authoritarian top-down power structure of a traditional corporation to a democratic work environment, where the workers own the company and elect the board of directors, transitioning to democracy in the workplace.
I believe that socialism is a regulatory response to capitalism.
I believe that laws, money, corporations, and government are social agreements, and I'm in favor of democratic social agreements.
I believe in the organized non-violent boycott as a way to control capitalists and change corrupt systems.
I am a pacifist. I am against violence. I am against citizens keeping guns in cities and towns with children. I am against war.
I try to eat plant-based / vegan foods to boycott the animal industry, to help with the climate crisis, to improve my health, to avoid animal cruelty, and to avoid the extinction of species of plants, animals and ecosystems.
I have been diagnosed with Retinitus Pigmentosa, which is a disease of progressive retinal degeneration. I am legally blind, although I have about 5-degrees of vision remaining in my fovea. I'm interested in researching and developing BCIs (Brain-Computer Interfaces), specifically BCIs that function as vision prostheses that may help with conditions like RP, or the more common degenerative retinal disease AMD (Age-related Macular Degeneration).
I enjoy playing computer games like Age of Empires and Rimworld. I used to program computer games when I was younger and would like to get back to it one day.
I love playing music, especially bass guitar. I've been listening to a lot of Rage Against the Machine and Enya recently.
I enjoy reading books, mostly non-fiction.
I enjoy studying religions. I've found a lot of value in Buddhism, and I meditate often daily.
Nina and I have recently had our first baby, a boy we call Tyoma.
I'm currently working at Brain Computer Enterprises, Cooperative Inc. on FOSH assistive consumer electronics.
I'm sober.

I'm rarely proud of my own writing; this piece is an exception. I'm proud of this one. It''s a topic I'd wanted to write about for a long time and it rested on a partnership with an incarcerated author, David Annarelli. I couldn't have written it without him. This is part of a series, one of which will be by him.
Please share; I'd like to get this one out in the world, along with its siblings.

Here's an ancient video I made about #Reddit in the r/politics forum announcing a publisher blacklist back in 2013.
Back then, they blocked almost two hundred news sites because of what they called "bad journalism". Whereupon they banned sites that had just won the Polk Award. And another that had just won a Pulitzer.
But of course, untrained mods know better than professionals working the field. (assholes)

Hey, folks, I’m in conversation with a Black media company in Chicago about moving here and I need to crowdsource server options, resources, etc. for them. Help?

The kind of #journalism Second Wave and #journalists such as I put out felt a bit pointless to promote on Twitter. We're not looking to start arguments or conflict to cause that good ol' social media type engagement (sides raging in the comments unknowingly generating clicks). We're covering ideas, people, happenings, all trying to improve our area, from #kalamazoo to #michigan . Below, the stories I've covered.

Just one small ask: we at @thexylom made the difficult decision to leave the bird app, during the height of #NewsMatch season. We know that our reach will suffer but we never regretted doing the right thing. Would you consider supporting our work by becoming a member? We have a special "I'd rather pay $8/month to nonprofit news than to a billionaire" tier, and any donation will be TRIPLED from now until 12/31! I'll send you a laptop sticker too!

I am a #writer who has written about #art for The Sunday Times for 19yrs. As an #ArtCritic & #journalism graduate I chose a #newspaper & #BroadcastMedia practice because I’m interested in #ArtCriticism that seeks audiences beyond the #ArtWorld. My marriage ended in my late 30s, so I am a #divorced mother of 2 in an #Ireland in which that is still, strangely, little-discussed. I published a #memoir called Negative Space in 2022 to pull some of these aspects of my life together.

Text on the back cover of my book. Original, intense, and always compelling - this is a highly accomplished debut. KEVIN BARRY There are few books that capture so gracefully and so truthfully the way in which art and life weave and bleed together. Negative Space is a beautiful. profound, unique book. SARA BAUME I adored Negative Space. It is a personal Ways Of Seeing for twenty-first-century women ... Leach beautifully articulates what it is to be a writer, what it is to be heartbroken, what it is to be betrayed and ultimately what it is to be human. EDEL COFFEY Press your ear to this book, and you will hear the tumultuous soundscape of a life, in all its joys and sorrows and wonderings. DOIREANN NI GHRIOFA Negative Space is a beautiful book - raw, honest, and vulnerable. Searingly intimate and thought-provoking. I’m a #science writer and editor for Scientific American, Quanta, Nautilus, and others—mostly, but not only, about #physics #QuantumFoundations #AI. I studied #PlanetaryScience #astronomy in grad school. I’ve done archival research on colonial #NewJersey, including slavery and land patterns. I’ve lived in #NewYorkCity, SF, Boston, Oxford, Tehran, Singapore.
I’m here for in-depth discussion, serendipitous encounters, even disagreements, as long as respectful.
War, Ukraine, Russia, self-promotion
I try not to broadcast my work too much, but this is a very basic idea of what I've been doing since late February (all on #Mayo internet): watching thousands of videos from the war in Ukraine to verify dates, locations, and sources of conflict footage. Storyful has verified hundreds of videos from the war in Ukraine for our news partners. If folks are interested I'll share bits now and then.
