Thanks to @pfefferle I've learnt about tags.pub, a service that proposes to fill in the gap of missing fediverse-wide hashtag search; basically, following "@ [hashtag] @ tags . pub" you get posts from the global fediverse, tagged with that keyword.

This has created an issue though: being a WordPress user myself, I follow the "WordPress" hashtag. Well, after TagsPub integration into WordPress activitypub plugin, too many off topic sites came on my timeline. Because there's the questionable habit to place "WordPress as a hashtag, by creators who would like to get better discovered.
Can I say it rude? I've blocked at least a dozen accounts because they where photoblogs and I'm a totally blind user.
Does that mean they're spammers? NO. It means they use the wrong hashtag.
"WordPress" isn't the appropriate tag for indicating "this is my blog, come read it". The appropriate one is FediBlog.

Let me suggest Matthias Pfefferle and even @FediTips to explain it. This fact of "FediBlog" hashtag isn't too much publicized, and people ignore this.

By way of an overdue #introduction; I'm rather a simple soul, I mainly enjoy tinkering with #computers, strumming #guitars and a wee bit of #spaniel sitting. I'm now taking some tentative first steps into #gardening too, just to fall in with the #retired stereotype I suppose. I'm also reading the #internet and I'm currently about halfway through it. I detest #BigTech, the #algorithm, #AI and #SurveillanceCapitalism. I love the #Fediverse because it reminds me of the olde worlde internet. I try to post/boost a little bit of everything and anything, including #art, #science, #botany, #transport, #animals, #architecture and #humour, without getting too mired in #politics, although it's not easy to avoid politics when you care about #nature and the #environment. I'm happy to interact with everyone/anyone irrespective of creed, colour, nationality or gender/sexual preferences. In the nicest sense of the word, I really don't give a fuck what you are. I consider myself to be a floating voter of centre/left leaning persuasion. I support the notion of managed #degrowth and #social responsibility. I would rather discuss the common ground we share and aim to respect our differences. I try to avoid fuckwits wherever I encounter them. Prázdná timeline je největší problém každého nováčka na Mastodonu.
Přijdeš, zaregistruješ se a... ticho. Nikdo tě nezná, ty nevíš koho
sledovat. Většina to vzdá ještě ten den.

Tohle mě štvalo, tak jsem to zkusil vyřešit.

Na fedi.mamutovo.cz najdeš jednoduchou stránku která tě provede
prvními kroky – bez zbytečného vysvětlování. Rovnou seznam lidí
které stojí za to sledovat, rovnou odkaz na appku, rovnou do toho.

Jsou tam i starter packy – stáhneš CSV, importuješ v nastavení
a za minutu máš timeline plnou českých a slovenských účtů.

Nově tam máme i uvítacího bota – každý kdo se zaregistruje na
mamutovo.cz dostane automaticky zprávu s odkazem. Aby nikdo
nezůstal ztracený hned na začátku.

Projekt je open-source a stále se na něm pracuje. Znáš někoho
kdo by v seznamu neměl chybět? Nebo máš nápad co by nováčkům
pomohlo? Napiš – buď sem do komentářů nebo na Gitea.

Hello, I followed the "selfhosted" instance on LemmyWorld in order to be able to talk about my experiences having them in order, without confusing criteria into Fediverse. Hoping they can be useful to others.

Current setup: Hostinger vps kvm2 plan, Debian12, YunoHost, Hostinger's docker manager installed.

Personal background: blind since birth, (I don't see), I'm mostly a computer power-user, worked and studied with ms-dos since 1989 until late 90s. Basic GNU/Linux knowledge in 2002, then interrupted in 2004.

I don't care talking about disability when discussing unrelated topics but it's necessary in this case as my needs are quite different from others.

So, I've been scared by self-hosting and have had shared hosting web sites until now. Until @_elena started self hosting her digital echosystem from scratch using YunoHost.

Due to lack of drivers I stopped with Linux on my private machine, drivers for the Braille display I had, and then the uneffective (at least for my need) screen reader capabilities on Linux's GUI based distros.

Finally in January 2026 I jumped in the dark after reading Elena Rossini's blog about YunoHost and having explored their demo pages. At the worst, I'll cancel the contract...

In the end I've managed to run WriteFreely, WordPress, CastoPod and GoToSocial, just by YunoHost; but if someone says terminal knowledge is not needed, this is a complete lie.

Where a system (such as YunoHost) can do the dirty work configuring postfix and nginx, I'll support it but it has its disadvantages: not every app can be installed through it.

For me it's very difficult to create and look after a config file on my own, it's frustrating for a sighted to miss a punctuation sign, an apostrophe, an indent. Let alone for me! A single space skipped, can crash a system.

A lie even saying that AI completely helps. It does solve some small, simple, immediate tasks but it has some mistakes as well. The so-called allucinations which create a real mess if you can rely on no personal skill.

Such as "sudo yunohost tools cert-install", or similar. AI wrote "cert-install" while the real command is "cert install"! A power user can get rid of it and correct, a beginner with no command-line knowledge, just copies, pastes, and gets scared.

My late attempt has been Madblog, a static markdown-based blogging platform with Fediverse activitypub in it, so I learned what Docker is and how it basically works. But I gave up, due to several timeouts and activitypub slow-downs. I think I'm going to use WordPress for blogging then. In case of comments it'll be more intuitive for non-fediverse folks.

This post is a test of a custom rule for Cloudflare I've been working on, and of my own conspiracy theory.

Forgive me my tinfoil hat: I have long suspected that the use of these tags (above), in fact, results in attracting more attention from crawlers/spiders/bots/whatever; that said automated systems exist which are specifically instructed to look for these tags, and to index any and all pages in which they find them.

If and only if my custom rule blocks a notably higher number of attempts to index this post alone, as compared to any of my other posts individually, I assume my theory is true until otherwise proven.

I will provide an update about this whenever I have one.

In the piece we look back on the last 15 years of alternative social media (ASM) research to reflect on how scholars have differently understood alternative social media such as the #Fediverse

Early beginnings focused on ASM as something based on F/LOSS, decentralisation and anti-commerical politics. Later came understandings of alternative as in "alt-right" social media, leading to the more contemporary focus on issues of governance. Throughout the piece we complicate such understandings to eventually propose a working definition which sees ASM as relational, emergent, and dynamic. In addition, we argue ASM scholars must use a situated perspective when studying ASM.

#PawFed is a project close to my heart. It's a collaborative map for animal welfare that bridges the #Fediverse and #OpenStreetMap.

The idea: mention @PawFed from your Mastodon account with hashtags and a location, and your report appears on the map. No signup, no app, just your existing Fediverse account.
It's not perfect yet, but the foundation is there. I will publish the source code soon under AGPL.

Because Fediprofile itself is an ActivityPub actor, it can follow badge issuers (again simplicity wins!).

When it detects a badge issued to one of the verified profile URLs connected to the account, it automatically stores it (and optionally boost it).

Users can then choose which badges to display. Users OWN their badges.

This creates a low-friction identity layer.

People who don’t want to run their own site can still have a public profile where they show:

• their social links
• their activity
• their badges

All in a decentralized way.

In the future, Fediprofile will support OAuth sign-in from platforms like:

• LinkedIn
• GitHub
• Google
• others (not instagram but is open-source and you can implement it ...)

This allows people to easily create a profile while still participating in the #Fediverse. (In a limited way).

Badges themselves are very simple files.

Often the badge information is encoded inside an image, usually a PNG.

So the image contains both:
• the visual badge
• the structured metadata describing the credential

One file, both human-friendly and machine-readable.

Other times these are simple json files.

Where things get interesting is with #ActivityPub.

@badgefed uses ActivityPub as a transport layer for decentralization, and also as a way to add social features.

This is actually very similar to how a Mastodon post works when you post a image.

Imagine:

• the image = the badge
• the post = the description of the recognition

Once published, anyone in the #Fediverse can interact with it:
reply, comment, like, boost, quote, or follow (and block) the issuer.

Badges become social objects.

I think it's a good time to explain how we see @badgefed and @fediprofile, how they work together, and how #badges can use #ActivityPub and the #Fediverse.

Also how this can help communities outside the fediverse!

I feel like there is a real desire for better tech out there.

The reason I am saying this is that I would never have expected that this little side project that is https://technically-good.ca/ would draw this much engagement - and I don't mean the quick-hit types of engagement, like likes and boosts.

I mean *real people* writing in with questions, comments, concerns. Creatives saying how an article really resonated with them, folks asking how they can help their friend group migrate to a less shitty platform, many others.

And I'm just running a tiny blog that's been up for only a few months!

I am very encouraged by these responses. We have momentum right now and it feels like something is shifting.

If you have a blog, post content critical of AI and the established algorithmic platforms, or provide tips for using alternatives - KEEP IT UP. ✊🏼Even if you think you are just one small person. Change is happening!

I am glad to announce that Madblog has now officially joined the #Fediverse family.

If you want to test it out, search for this URL on your Fediverse client.

Madblog has already supported #Webmentions for the past couple of weeks, allowing your blog posts to be mentioned by other sites with Webmentions support (WordPress, Lemmy, HackerNews…) and get those mentions directly rendered on your page.

It now adds ActivityPub support too, using #Pubby, another little Python library that I’ve put together myself (just like Webmentions) as a mean to quickly plug ActivityPub support to any Python Web app.

Webmentions and Pubby follow similar principles and implement a similar API, and you can easily use them to add federation support to your existing Web applications - a single bind_webmentions or bind_activitypub call to your existing Flask/FastAPI/Tornado application should suffice for most of the cases.

Madblog may have now become the easiest way to publish a federated blog - and perhaps the only way that doesn’t require a database, everything is based on plain Markdown files.

If you have a registered domain and a certificate, then hosting your federated blog is now just a matter of:

And Markdown files can be hosted wherever you like - a Git folder, an Obsidian Vault, a Nextcloud Notes installation, a folder on your phone synchronized over SyncThing…

Federation support is also at a quite advanced state compared to e.g. #WriteFreely. It currently supports:

• Interactions rendered on the articles: if you like, boost, quote or reply to an article, all interactions are rendered directly at the bottom of the article (interactions with WriteFreely through federated accounts were kind of lost in the void instead)

• Guestbook support (optional): mentions to the federated Madblog handle that are not in response to articles are now rendered on a separate /guestbook route

• Email notifications: all interactions can have email notifications

• Support for quotes, also on Mastodon

• Support for mentions, just drop a @joe@example.com in your Markdown file and Joe will get a notification

• Support for hashtag federation

• Support for split-domain configurations, you can host your blog on blog.example.com but have a Fediverse handle like @blog@example.com. Search by direct post URL on Mastodon will work with both cases

• Support for custom profile fields, all rendered on Mastodon, with verification support

• Support for moderation, either through blocklist or allowlist, with support for rules on handles/usernames, URLs, domains or regular expressions

• A partial (but comprehensive for the provided features) implementation of the Mastodon API

Hey #fediverse people, I've an ask: If you appreciate all that I do for the fediverse and open social web, and you'd like to see me continue to do that work, please support my work financially.

Mija mniej więcej rok od momentu kiedy „uciekłem” z rodzinnego domu do chłopaka, a 1 stycznia będzie rok od kiedy oficjalnie razem z mamą się wyprowadziliśmy. Mąż mojej mamy (z którym ma jeszcze mojego młodszego brata) stosował na niej przemoc psychiczną i ekonomiczną (+jeśli dobrze pamiętam, to też ją zdradzał), a na mnie psychiczną i fizyczną. Aktualnie jedyny posiadany przez mamę dobytek to samochód, bo dom nie jest na nią przypisany. Mama pracuje na pełen etat, studiuje zaocznie, a kiedy ma wolne dorabia sobie na kelnerce. Ja też pracuję i dokładam lub pożyczam swoje pieniądze do wsparcia domowego budżetu.
Aktualnie sprawa jest taka, że największe koszty domowe to opłata wynajmu mieszkania (w naszej miejscowości mieszkania są horrendalnie drogie jak na to, co miasto sobą oferuje), a zaraz potem jest moje leczenie tzn. psychiatra, psycholog, leki na zaburzenia lękowo depresyjne + leczenie i obserwacja kilku chorób współistniejących (które się wzajemnie napędzają :p), no i studia mamy, a za rok dojdą do tego jeszcze moje. Ogólnie nie mamy żadnych oszczędności i żyjemy „od pierwszego do pierwszego”, a do tego nie mamy, póki co żadnego poczucia stabilności ani perspektywy na najbliższą przyszłość.

Gdyby ktoś z Was miał może jakieś rady dotyczące szukania pomocy, wsparcia prawnego, finansowego itp. albo chciałby się podzielić swoim doświadczeniem, byłoby mi bardzo miło.

Evidently, I ruffled some feathers of a certain sort of people on a "Quiet Public" discussion by saying something that's not even that crazy.

They're reporting me en masse, even reporting posts that are completely unrelated to that discussion. They're seething because they can't accept that not everyone is going to have the same opinion on the Fediverse.

New instance, new #introduction !

Hi #fediverse ! We’re the European Southern Observatory, and we design, build and operate ground-based telescopes.

One of them is our Extremely Large Telescope, currently under construction in #Chile. It will have a 39 m mirror, and its rotating enclosure will weigh 6100 tonnes, or about 700 mastodons!

We’re looking forward to chatting with all of you about #astronomy

In this 4-minute video I explain what the #fediverse is to people not familiar with it, mentioning some of its great features and benefits (interoperability, no ads, no surveillance...) and I set it in contrast to the world of Big Tech social platforms. I argue that, with the rise of Big Tech oligarchs and the current political climate, there has never been a better time to join the fediverse.

I spent 18 months trying to make it on YouTube: livestreams, editing, shorts, chaptered reviews, commentary, no shortcuts. I got silence in return. This is not a rant. Not a thread. Just a text — written at 5:09 AM, on May 5, 2025 — when I realized the algorithm had never planned to let me play.

I can’t sleep. These past few days have been chaotic. My dream of becoming a YouTuber has collapsed. Eighteen months of relentless work, only to realize: insisting any further would just be a waste of time. I don’t have the right profile. I don’t meet the criteria. I bring no fame to the table, and I can’t afford to build it. YouTube doesn’t want me. My videos are online, I follow all the rules, but I’m playing alone in a corner. No one’s looking for me. No one’s finding me. The algorithm put a dunce cap on my head. But YouTube doesn’t humiliate people individually. That’s the magic of the system: no one is more important than the platform itself. The logo is huge. Your channel name? Tiny. Your avatar? Hidden. Your link? Buried. Your calls to action? Ignored. You’re not at home on YouTube. You’re on their turf. YouTube is the only star. And to keep it that way, it rotates the faces in the spotlight. No YouTuber is bigger than YouTube.

The algorithm decides. The algorithm selects. The algorithm benches you like a football coach who makes five billion players believe they’re all starters. You’re on the bench. You stay on the bench. And you can’t leave. Two views. Three. Sometimes twelve. Rarely seventeen. Everyone sees you sitting there, waiting for your moment. But it never comes. Even when another player gets injured and there’s five minutes left in the game, you don’t go in. You’ve become a vagrant of the system. You sit there, stuck in humiliation. And the worst part is, your failure is public. Your “3 views” are carved in stone. Everyone sees them. Like a giant sign saying: “Look at this loser.”

So I ask myself: what did I do to YouTube? Did I kill their mother? Did I insult their religion? No. It’s just how they operate. A massive filtering strategy. Let everyone in, hoping to spot one Samuel Étienne, tired of French public TV, one Jamy, bored with his retirement. YouTube is like a spoiled child who got a billion toys for Christmas and can’t pick one — so he chooses no one. He opens them, discards them, sighs, and moves on. He doesn’t need to choose. He’s no longer capable of it. So he stops choosing. And we, we stay there, hoping to be picked. Still believing in the miracle. Because despite everything, YouTube has a baby face. A familiar face. You can’t really hate it. That sweet face is what makes the trap perfect.

Mutual aid. Organizing. Sharing, contextualizing, and making meaning of news and health information to counter propaganda and information overload. The use cases for alternative social networks – not controlled by techbro white supremacist CEO's working with their cronies in authoritarian governments – practically write themselves in today's world. And with so many talented social scientists, designers, systems thinkers, and developers directly impacted by DOGE, MAGA, et al, there are a lot of people with the right skills for these new networks to make rapid progress.

The good news is there's a lot of promising work happening in the decentralized social media ecosystems known as the fediverses ("federated universes") and the ATmosphere (a fediverse built on Bluesky's AT protocol), including DAIR-tube, Blacksky, the #FreeFediverse, and more.

Still, as promising as these efforts are, there's still a long ways to go.

Now for making Pixelix available on iOS we have to invest almost all of our profits we ever made from the app into hardware equipment, meaning we got not much back for our hard work. That is not really sustainable. We are currently still experimenting on how to make open source software development sustainable but as we figured that is a widespread problem which is not so easy to solve. (4/4) ->

We do. There's a ton of them. They reach hundreds to millions of people.

The real issue, is that social media algorithms promote what is popular. And what's popular is garbage. And conservatives are great at making garbage.

Small update for DuckDuckSocial
Added the ability to customize date (either absolute date or relative to current date)
Added ability to automatically filter out words before performing search (probably only useful to me but someone else might have a purpose for it). And I probably posted about this before but I couldn't find it so just so you're aware you don't need an API key for the web version (still required for Android extension)

Trying out this #introduction thing (finally).

Unemployed computer tech and aspiring novelist. Came to Mastodon because of the #foss and #fediverse thing, as I'm quite fond of open standards and non-corporate media (and well, anything really). I wasn't quite sure how to use it since I had never touched xitter, and didn't get the whole micro-blogging thing. I was always more of a forums/Reddit kind of person (I'm on Lemmy now instead BTW). But I found this place to be a great source of information, support, and community regarding autism and #NeuroDiversity since I am a late-self-realized #actuallyautistic and #ActuallyADHD (a.k.a. #AuDHD ) Turns out that "neurodiversity" has been a "special interest" of mine for a long time, before I even knew the word for it. So I spend a lot of time here, probably more than I should. 😛

I'm also working on several projects that I guess can only be collectively referred to as "social benefit" projects. I'll talk about those occasionally and even asking for help, because they are big projects that will need many people and I don't work so well by myself.

And I'm also one of those progressive, lefty, pinko, equal rights, social justice, digital freedom, privacy advocating, LGBT+ ally type people. I grew up on Star Trek ok? They debated whether a cloud of gas or a big rock was actually a person or not. Makes the crap we have to deal with right now IRL seem pretty stupid.

So if you like talking about that kind of stuff, or any of my copious other SpIns (many of which are in my profile), I'm game.

I don't know why I need to say this, but PLEASE, add alt text to your images whenever you're able to do so! Not only does it help people who are blind, but it also helps people who simply don't / can't load images.
