Just finished optimizing and checking things after being away from this machine in particular for a while. Our server stack could theoretically handle 5k more registered users and about 1500-2000 monthly active users before we'd need to start thinking about scaling up.

Right now, we have 889 users and around 410 monthly active ones and we're running at roughly 25-30% capacity. Plenty of space to grow.

We're federating with nearly 42000 other servers, which is actually the heaviest part of running an instance, not the local users. Every boost, reply, and follow across the fediverse adds work for our servers.

It was never my intention to grow this server this much or even have this many users, but now we have regular people, authors, political parties, organizations, YouTubers, and more. I'm still amazed about this. Yet I'm keeping a low profile because, even though we have our own admin team, at the end of the day this is still my hobby project organized by me and my wife.

That said, I've done my best to keep things as flexible as possible, and our finances are stable. I'm really glad my "hobby project" has brought so much joy to so many people.

masto-admin, full text search maintenance question :boost_requested:

I have full text search enabled with opensearch (elasticsearch fork) as the back end, single node (and definitely not 100% correctly configured for that). I've been noticing that pagination abruptly ends sometimes, requiring changing the search query date range and then continuing that way

(mastodon also seems to complain pretty hard in the admin page, like it's not up at all, even though it functions fine and it still works fine)

how would I fix that so the pagination doesn't abruptly end? trash and setup opensearch from scratch and redeploy search index?

Age verification on mastodon.longlandclan.id.au:

- Sign-ups are disabled, you need an invite link from me to sign up.
- If I give you an invite link, it's because you're related to me, I've met you, and I know you're over 16.

The only exception to the latter is if it's a bot that I set up (I've made two so far). These are obviously *not* more than 16 years old, nor have I "met" them, but I have access to their source code and control of the process that runs them.

I don't take responsibility for age verification of remote accounts: that is the responsibility of the moderators on *those* servers.

Viceversa, if any user would be against this decision, the staff is open for discussing it through Mastodon/Discord/Matrix. Should this not be enough, I completely understand if you would leave The Gamer's Tavern and there won't be any hard feelings.

We're in for one of the darkest periods in the history of mankind, with most of the world political parties turning to the far right wing, and for the little we can, we will always make our users the top priority.

In case you would not feel safe anymore in your Mastodon home, know that there will always be a seat for you at The Gamer's Tavern.

But, with all the recent fuckeries about AI profiles, sketchy content and the cherry on the top, the full endorsing and usage of the Trump administration to leverage the avoidance of the stricter (and thank the gods for that) European laws against hate speech, harmful contents and whatnots in social media, we took the decision with a heavy heart to save our users and de-federate completely with Threads.net

When Threads started federating we knew that sooner or later something bad would happen, but we decided at the time to go for a mild approach and just limit the federation.

That mean that no posts from Threads were available from the get-go in the Federated timeline and following an user would require to know the handle.

We decided to do so with our users in mind, to give them the chance to broaden their home timeline

Hey adventurers!

Get ready for a thread(s).

With all the recent heat about Meta and seeing that the company decided to fully take advantage of a pretty much fascist political party to leverage their own needs, after a peaceful discussion the staff at The Gamer's Tavern decided to de-federate from Threads.net effective immediately.

I have added the most popular Fediverse software to the sample config. Firefish versioning needs a custom regex 😬

Anything that's older than ca. 1-3 months gets silenced by this config, and versions that are ca. 1 year or older get suspended.

The script will demote any suspend to silence if the server knows about a follow relationship.

The current sample config will block around 4000 outdated servers 😱

Scripts to identify abandoned versions of Mastodon and push a blocklist, or automatically manage using ready-made blocklists: codeberg.org/GunChleoc/mastodo

Update:
- Push block update if only the comment changed
- Never block your own domain
- Improve formatting of console output
- Add firebird.com domains with non-standard versioning to sample allowlist

Update:
- Upgrade to Mastodon.py 2.1.4
- Add sleep for fediverse.observer's flood control

In regard of the new announced (too much for my taste) bluesky bridge., I had the displeasure to enforce full suspension of snarfed.org and brid.gy domains from federating.
Not only in my opinion, it's a disloyal move to all the to make those OPT-OUT by default and whith all the trump and whistle it feel more like an ad campaign than a true "improvement /innovation"

@snarfed.org@snarfed.org I really wish you would stop the project, make it opt-in and then propose it again.

So its done! I finally released a fairly easy to install (from scratch) Hugo based Static Site generator with full ActivityPub support.

It has step-by-step instructions on how to set it up for your own blog or static website.

One of the coolest features for me, other than having your static site blog posts show up as posts in the Fediverse is the support for interacting with those posts. Any replies you leave, likes, or boosts will show up in the "comments" section of the website on the page associated with the post. How cool is that!

@Barkeep@plural.cafe

plural.cafe instance meta (rules rewrite)

Hello folks! @starfall speaking, we spent some time yesterday rewriting the rules section with an eye on making paragraphs shorter and our values more explicit.

They haven't taken effect yet; the draft can be seen at hackmd.io/@starfall/plural-caf

Some things are added to the old rules, not just reworded:

* "blatant advertising" -> "corporate advertising", with a specific exception for self-promotion
* explicitly sex and kink positive, but these must still be content warned appropriately
* explicitly sex worker positive, give or take some legal requirements
* required content warnings section added, with some of the most common triggers we know of
* some changes to the bot account policy - bots must be opt-in, not opt-out, automated posts shouldn't be on public
* more explicit federation policy around suspending some servers that don't block servers we suspend

Feel free to comment and suggest changes here or @ us directly.
