Help Gillian Complete Her Journey — Gender-Affirming Care Hello everyone, My name is Gillian Danica Brinton. I am a 60-year-old transgender woman living in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and I am reaching out to this community with a very personal request for support. For much of my life, I lived trying to meet the expectations of others, while knowing deep within myself that the person the world saw was not the person I truly was. Finding the courage to finally embrace my identity and begin living authentically as Gillian has been one of the most significant and life-changing experiences of my life. I am now receiving medically supervised gender-affirming hormone treatment and working towards the next important stages of my transition, including specialist medical assessments and, when clinically appropriate, gender-affirming surgery. Unfortunately, the financial reality of accessing this care in South Africa is a considerable obstacle. I am currently unemployed, and the costs of specialist consultations, surgery, travel, accommodation, medication, and recovery are far beyond what I can manage on my own. Most of my research-peers are inactive on Mastodon, to a point where it doesn't seem useful to be part of this community. In my view the reason is that we currently have an 'algorithm' where each post receives equal weight. This means that an important message by a colleague can be snowed under by other posts. A simple open, transparent and user-controlled algorithm where posts are sorted based on boosts/favourites by the ones you follow would be ideal. Does this exists? #Mastodon #fediverse

What if next year's #FediDay became a Democratic Social Media Day?

We need fewer conversations exclusively among Fediverse enthusiasts, and more conversations among people who care about democracy and are actively seeking alternatives to Big Tech social media.

Let's bring together journalists, politicians, civil society organizations, researchers, and grassroots activists.

And let's bring more diversity to the stage: immigrants, Black communities, people from the Global South, and minority groups who are already using the internet to organize, mobilize, and make their voices heard.

Not everyone is on the Fediverse. Some are exploring other alternatives. Others are politically active on Big Tech platforms because that's where their communities are. Let's invite them too, listen to their experiences, and understand their needs.

We need to move beyond discussing alternative platforms and start treating political communication as democratic public infrastructure.

This should be a European-level effort, bringing together EU institutions, governments, civil society, and diverse communities.

The Fediverse should be part of that conversation, but the conversation needs to be much bigger than the Fediverse.

Still off coding, but I keep an eye on the #Fediverse. I asked #Pixelfed twice where to find the documentation for their API endpoints so I could implement them in #Fedilab. I never got a reply.
Today, they published new app versions, but the commit only changes a README file. Honestly, it's frustrating. I like to add new features quickly so people can enjoy them, but here I just can't.

Okay guys here's the deal

I'm trying to get into all this fediverse stuff and I desperately want to get off discord. One of my peers tried to set up a "matrix server" with something called Sable, and I was able to get into that but unfortunately I had to scrap that and leave the discord server because they were a chronically mean POS.

There Is No Correct Way to Be Poor

The policing of poverty is a form of class discipline. It protects unequal distributions of wealth and power by turning deprivation into evidence of personal failure and obedience into a condition of survival. It teaches people to scrutinise the poor instead of the structures that keep wealth concentrated at the top, making inequality appear earned, moral, and inevitable.

People want to believe the world is fair, so if someone is poor, they must’ve failed somehow. That belief protects the comfortable from confronting a harsher reality: poverty is produced and maintained by an economic order in which some people accumulate property, profit, and security because others are underpaid, overcharged, indebted, displaced, and kept desperate enough to accept whatever conditions are offered to them.

Dividing poor people into “deserving” and “undeserving” serves that order perfectly. It allows society to ration help through surveillance, shame, bureaucracy, and humiliation while leaving the distribution of wealth and power untouched. The scrutiny stays fixed on whether a poor person has suffered correctly enough to deserve relief, while the people and institutions controlling wealth remain largely beyond examination.

When people are closer to poverty than they want to admit, enforcing these rules against other poor people can feel like buying safety or respectability. If they can prove that someone else is lazy, irresponsible, fraudulent, or morally inferior, perhaps they can convince themselves that their own precarity is different. Disciplining people below you does nothing to move you closer to the people above you. It gives you none of their property, capital, political access, or protection from catastrophe. It recruits you into defending a hierarchy that can discard you just as easily.

That is the class contradiction at the heart of it: workers are encouraged to police one another over scraps while those who control wages, housing, credit, land, and capital continue deciding the conditions under which everyone else lives. A person on a salary is taught to resent someone receiving assistance, while the landlord raising the rent, the employer suppressing wages, the company cutting benefits, and the wealthy extracting far more from society frequently escape the same moral scrutiny.

When poverty is framed as a moral, behavioural, or skill issue, the people with the most power get to keep that power. The system is also disabling by design: it creates and worsens illness and disability through deprivation, overwork, inaccessible healthcare, unsafe housing, and chronic insecurity, then punishes people when those conditions make them less able to work. Employers can suppress wages. Landlords can keep raising rents. Governments can refuse to guarantee housing, healthcare, childcare, or income.

There is no manual for “how to be poor correctly,” because poverty is a material condition shaped by decisions about wages, rent, ownership, taxation, debt, public services, labour rights, policing, and who is allowed to control resources that everyone needs.

The obsession with how poor people spend money reveals the hierarchy plainly. A poor person is expected to justify every meal, every purchase, every moment of pleasure, while wealth itself is rarely subjected to comparable moral scrutiny. The poor are asked whether they deserve a small comfort. The rich can possess more homes, land, money, and power than they could use in several lifetimes without being required to justify the accumulation with anything approaching the same intensity.

A serious response to poverty requires reducing the power of those who benefit from deprivation and expanding the material power of the people living under it. That means trusting poor people with resources and dignity: unconditional cash, stable housing, healthcare, childcare, strong labour protections, and wages that actually cover life.
People generally know what they need to survive. Deprivation keeps people desperate enough to accept exploitation, and the moral language surrounding poverty helps make that arrangement appear natural, deserved, and inevitable.

So stop demanding that poor people prove they deserve to live. Stop making survival conditional on obedience, humiliation, employability, productivity, or moral purity. Guarantee the material conditions people need to survive, take power away from those who profit from keeping people desperate, and make hoarded wealth the thing society is forced to justify.

Hi everyone,

I need to raise $280 this month for October groceries and platform maintenance.

I’m a disabled Indonesian independent writer and mutual aid organiser, and this work is sustained largely through community support rather than a fixed salary.

$80 is for groceries for the second half of October, with a deadline of 15 October. I’ve already covered my electricity, water, and internet for the month, and I still have enough food to get me through roughly the middle of October. I just need to make sure I can restock for the final two weeks.

The remaining $200 is for one year of VPS hosting for wrzky.com and mutualaidspace.org, with a deadline of 20 October. My current shared web hosting renews on 30 October, so I need that time to set up the VPS, migrate and test both production sites, switch everything over properly, and make sure there is no service interruption, especially on mutualaidspace.org. Hopefully, we can meet this goal a lot sooner than that.

mutualaidspace.org is the public-facing mutual aid infrastructure I’ve been building: campaign amplification, submitted requests, weekly roundups, and federation across the Fediverse. The server-side work has grown beyond what makes sense to keep forcing through shared hosting.

wrzky.com needs to move with it. It's my publishing home, and it's also where I build and test federation infrastructure and prototypes before developing them further for mutualaidspace.org. Some of that prototype work has been sitting on hold, and keeping wrzky.com on shared hosting would leave the development side of the project under the same limits I’m trying to move away from.

If you have money you can redistribute, please send some of it towards the $280 goal. $5, $10, $20, whatever is within your capacity; all of it moves me closer to having food covered and getting both sites onto infrastructure that can actually sustain the work.

Let's take a moment to explore the concept of my block list.

"Billy Bob" is like:

> "I like child porn and share photos and videos of child porn."

So naturally, Billy Bob ends up on the block list. But along comes "Mary Sue," and she is like:

> "I support Billy Bob, and I am going to like, share, and boost Billy Bob's post."

So naturally, Mary Sue ends up on the block list. Then along comes "John Doe," and he is like:

> "It is completely unfair of you to add Mary Sue to your block list! Mary Sue is not Billy Bob — and so what if she is liking, sharing, and boosting Billy Bob's child porn post? I do not believe anyone should use your block list, and I insist that people should block you instead."

A wise person sees the problem and knows why all of these people are now on the block list, and why anyone who claims the block list is unfair should also be on the block list. No one should be defending child porn, nor the individuals who like, share, and boost child porn posts, nor should they come to the defense of such individuals while denouncing both the block list and its creator.

I am applying this exact same logic to spammers and scammers. It is not a hard concept to understand, and it is not unfair either — unless you are pro-spammer and pro-scammer.

(Speaking personally, I see scammers as just as bad as pedophiles, because they too often prey upon the weak, vulnerable, and defenseless. Scammers are known to target the young, the elderly, and the disabled.)

Hey #Fediverse I’m an #author and #indiedev thats bounced between a few different accounts most recently on GoToSocial, but I missed feeling like I was a part of a community, which led me to join omg.lol.

I’m currently writing a massive sprawling epic fantasy told across serialized short stories that take place across eras and realities. It’s available for free to read.

There Is No Correct Way to Be Poor

The policing of poverty is a form of class discipline. It protects unequal distributions of wealth and power by turning deprivation into evidence of personal failure and obedience into a condition of survival. It teaches people to scrutinise the poor instead of the structures that keep wealth concentrated at the top, making inequality appear earned, moral, and inevitable.

People want to believe the world is fair, so if someone is poor, they must’ve failed somehow. That belief protects the comfortable from confronting a harsher reality: poverty is produced and maintained by an economic order in which some people accumulate property, profit, and security because others are underpaid, overcharged, indebted, displaced, and kept desperate enough to accept whatever conditions are offered to them.

Dividing poor people into “deserving” and “undeserving” serves that order perfectly. It allows society to ration help through surveillance, shame, bureaucracy, and humiliation while leaving the distribution of wealth and power untouched. The scrutiny stays fixed on whether a poor person has suffered correctly enough to deserve relief, while the people and institutions controlling wealth remain largely beyond examination.

When people are closer to poverty than they want to admit, enforcing these rules against other poor people can feel like buying safety or respectability. If they can prove that someone else is lazy, irresponsible, fraudulent, or morally inferior, perhaps they can convince themselves that their own precarity is different. Disciplining people below you does nothing to move you closer to the people above you. It gives you none of their property, capital, political access, or protection from catastrophe. It recruits you into defending a hierarchy that can discard you just as easily.

That is the class contradiction at the heart of it: workers are encouraged to police one another over scraps while those who control wages, housing, credit, land, and capital continue deciding the conditions under which everyone else lives. A person on a salary is taught to resent someone receiving assistance, while the landlord raising the rent, the employer suppressing wages, the company cutting benefits, and the wealthy extracting far more from society frequently escape the same moral scrutiny.

When poverty is framed as a moral, behavioural, or skill issue, the people with the most power get to keep that power. The system is also disabling by design: it creates and worsens illness and disability through deprivation, overwork, inaccessible healthcare, unsafe housing, and chronic insecurity, then punishes people when those conditions make them less able to work. Employers can suppress wages. Landlords can keep raising rents. Governments can refuse to guarantee housing, healthcare, childcare, or income.

There is no manual for “how to be poor correctly,” because poverty is a material condition shaped by decisions about wages, rent, ownership, taxation, debt, public services, labour rights, policing, and who is allowed to control resources that everyone needs.

The obsession with how poor people spend money reveals the hierarchy plainly. A poor person is expected to justify every meal, every purchase, every moment of pleasure, while wealth itself is rarely subjected to comparable moral scrutiny. The poor are asked whether they deserve a small comfort. The rich can possess more homes, land, money, and power than they could use in several lifetimes without being required to justify the accumulation with anything approaching the same intensity.

A serious response to poverty requires reducing the power of those who benefit from deprivation and expanding the material power of the people living under it. That means trusting poor people with resources and dignity: unconditional cash, stable housing, healthcare, childcare, strong labour protections, and wages that actually cover life.
People generally know what they need to survive. Deprivation keeps people desperate enough to accept exploitation, and the moral language surrounding poverty helps make that arrangement appear natural, deserved, and inevitable.

So stop demanding that poor people prove they deserve to live. Stop making survival conditional on obedience, humiliation, employability, productivity, or moral purity. Guarantee the material conditions people need to survive, take power away from those who profit from keeping people desperate, and make hoarded wealth the thing society is forced to justify.

There's no shortage of Fediverse software that are either built with AI assistance (including vibe coding), or welcomes AI contribution, but I'm not seeing the same level of outrage.

hi friends, i’m moss; i’m disabled/unable to work and suffer from chronic illness and chronic burnout. i’ve been struggling for a few years now since i suddenly had to live by myself after my mother and grandmother passed. my income which is mostly from selling things online is extremely inconsistent and i rely on mutual aid to fill in the gaps, which is unfortunately also inconsistent. the uncertainty of never knowing if my basic needs will be met has taken a toll on my health and further affected my ability to generate income. right now i’m dealing with another big wall which is that my car broke down and, aside from occasionally getting rides from friends, i am now stuck at home until it can get fixed. i need funds to get back on the road again which will help my ability to earn money (meeting with craigslist buyers/taking packages to post office) and generally care for myself independently. i also need help paying my water bill which is due 9/30. it’s only $30, and is the one bill that, due to the company’s awful policies, i will not be able to reactivate if it were to be cancelled for nonpayment. it is always the most urgent monthly bill for me for that reason. i am also low on bathroom necessities and would very much appreciate any help with my ability to maintain my personal hygiene. all of these needs are reflected on my goal on my ko-fi page. it’s currently at 120/300 as of writing this, or 40%. i can accept paypal, venmo and most cards via ko-fi. anything helps. exceeding my goal will let me address less urgent but still essential needs. stay safe and lead with love, friends.

I like Mastodon, I really do. But it has so, so many dependencies, and updating it on illumos or OpenBSD is getting really difficult, release after release.

Some dependencies are primarily distributed as binaries, or only build on Linux and macOS. It's not Mastodon's fault, but it depends on them.

That’s why, in my opinion, solutions like snac, GoToSocial, or littleFedi have a reason to exist: all of this is much, much easier...

hi friends, i’m moss; i’m disabled/unable to work and suffer from chronic illness and chronic burnout. i’ve been struggling for a few years now since i suddenly had to live by myself after my mother and grandmother passed. my income which is mostly from selling things online is extremely inconsistent and i rely on mutual aid to fill in the gaps, which is unfortunately also inconsistent. the uncertainty of never knowing if my basic needs will be met has taken a toll on my health and further affected my ability to generate income. right now i’m dealing with another big wall which is that my car broke down and, aside from occasionally getting rides from friends, i am now stuck at home until it can get fixed. i need funds to get back on the road again which will help my ability to earn money (meeting with craigslist buyers/taking packages to post office) and generally care for myself independently. i also need help paying my water bill which is due 9/30. it’s only $30, and is the one bill that, due to the company’s awful policies, i will not be able to reactivate if it were to be cancelled for nonpayment. it is always the most urgent monthly bill for me for that reason. i am also low on bathroom necessities and would very much appreciate any help with my ability to maintain my personal hygiene. all of these needs are reflected on my goal on my ko-fi page. it’s currently at 120/300 as of writing this, or 40%. i can accept paypal, venmo and most cards via ko-fi. anything helps. exceeding my goal will let me address less urgent but still essential needs. stay safe and lead with love, friends.

I want the #Fediverse to grow. But out of curiosity, how well would the Fediverse scale? What would happen if the current user base increased by a factor of 10, 100, or 1000?

And if the answer is "bad things", what would need to be done to make the Fediverse cope with such an expanded user base?

(For the purpose of this thought exercise, assume that each specific Fediverse software implementation would likewise multiply their user base by this factor, albeit spread out over more instances.)

I had announced that I would add #FediHood support to #Fedilab.
I won't (at least for now) because this #Fediverse project didn't find its audience.
It could be a good add-on to existing projects, but it might not need its own dedicated software on the Fediverse.
I don't see it as a misstep in my contributions, but it's important to remain realistic.
