Warum empfehle ich bei Social Media das dezentrale Fediverse, aber bei Messengern zentrale Lösungen wie Signal? Kein Widerspruch, sondern unterschiedliche Anforderungen: Social Media ist öffentlicher Diskurs – dort schützt Dezentralität vor Zensur, Manipulation und kommerzieller Ausbeutung. Messenger hingegen sind private Kommunikation, bei der Benutzerfreundlichkeit, Zuverlässigkeit und Metadatenminimierung zählen. Genau das liefern Signal und Threema besser als XMPP oder Matrix. Dann empfindest du das #fediverse einfach als zu kompliziert. Du willst eine Komplettlösung, EINE #Plattform für alles. Dass da zig Instanzen und Äpps, für dies und jenes... willst du gar nicht wissen.
Was wirklich helfen würde - wenn beispielsweise der ÖRR mehr mit und im #Fediverse machen würde. Aber, gerade wieder im MoMa gesehen, "schreiben sie uns per WhatsApp". Auch gerne genommen, Instagram oder Facebook.
Hier würde ich mir auch mehr digitale Souveränität bei #ARD und #ZDF wünschen, zusätzlich zu Accounts wie @3sat oder @tagesschau

I recently hibernated my #LinkedIn account because that was always my top result, even though I never post there.

Michael, autoritäre Macker und durchaus auch Mackerinnen wird es immer geben. Das Beste ist es meiner Ansicht nach, solche Typen einfach zu ignorieren. Fast immer habe ich dabei die Erfahrung gemacht, dass diese Menschen nicht - wie viele andere - mit einem diskutieren wollen, sondern einfach nur nur versuchen, einen runterzumachen.
Wie sagte doch irgendein schlauer Mensch mal: Aufstehen, Krönchen richten, weitermachen. Ich denke, dass Du ganz sicher Deinem Gusto nach weitermachen wirst.
Das Fediverse ist ein Ort, an dem man das sehr gut kann. Und mit Digitalcourtage im Rücken erst Recht.

That’s where the blind, dogmatic lying comes in, not malicious, but structurally embedded. It recycles a familiar narrative, classic signal-to-noise inflation, where old ideas are dressed up as insight.
This group of people abstracts away power and material constraints. “Growth” is framed as an individual mindset or path choice, when in reality sideways movement is shaped by structural limits – the very things the #OMN project is addressing: lack of upward mobility, organisational bottlenecks, precarity, stagnation, and misallocation of labour. That’s the “blind lie”: turning systemic limitation into a personal growth narrative. Not evil, but deeply misleading.
What we see is the individualist path (#stupidindividualism), centres on the individual journey – your path, your growth, your mindset – with no sense of collective structures, shared infrastructure, governance, or power relations. This is the failure mode we should be composting, instead, the current mess drags “open” thinking back into #neoliberal self-optimisation culture. Rather than asking how we build systems that enable meaningful growth, it asks how you reinterpret your path as growth, that’s a dead end.
It also contributes to resource and focus drift. This kind of thinking has real consequences for projects like #openweb and #OMN as it encourages endless reframing instead of building – validates drift that weakens focus on the native outcomes and infrastructure we actually need. In practice, it leads to misplaced competency, misallocated effort, and degraded signal. That’s the “dangerously incompetent” part – not personal failure, but systemic impact.
The deeper issue is that these aren’t bad people, it’s that they are aligned – unthinkingly – with #deathcult thinking by individualising systemic issues and amplifying noise in already fragile spaces. They arrived with this mindset, and the environments they shape reinforce it.
A grounded approach would ask harder questions: how do we build collective structures that make sideways movement meaningful? Without that, this is just narrative smoothing, smoke and mirrors.
So to sum up: the post linked above isn’t wrong, it’s worse than that, it’s harmless-sounding, blinded ideology that recycles known ideas, strips out material context, reinforces individualist framing, and adds noise where clarity is needed. In a healthy ecosystem, this would be background chatter, in a struggling one – like the current open social web space – it becomes actively damaging.

I’m in Oxford, and I saw that event listed. My reaction was: I can’t stomach that. Still, I probably should have gone, it would have been useful to have that conversation in person.
The problem we now face is these people will #gatekeep… if the is no way in or out without there agreement we are going to fail, there is a long history of this mess making. I have seen the same problem people destroy numerous grassroots movements over the 40 years I have been working in this path.

Following a week long battle with the federation and those incessant timeouts on my noc.social account, I have ultimately succeeded in migrating my followers to this new, self-hosted home at `unkn.uk`.
Constructing this permanent base of operations was a task, but finally, normal service can be resumed.
I am quite relieved to see everyone's handles in my followers list again rather than just 502 headers.

@64bithero yes, but I also understand how posting pictures of yourself on the Internet feel a bit vulnerable. I think #Mastodon / the #Fediverse is full of people who are very cautious about things like privacy and artificial intelligence… so I’m also sometimes wary of putting my face online. I still do it though, because in my case, at least I think the benefits outweigh the risk….
@Knattodon Werkzeuge, welche mehrere Plattformen bedienen können, haben zwei große Nachteile:
a) Die großen werbefinanzierten Plattformen, machen diese gern kaputt (oder lassen sich die API Zugänge teuer bezahlen).
b) Die Potentiale jeder Plattform bleiben ungenutzt, also auch die Potentiale des #Fediverse Insbesondere zur besseren Gesprächen. (Also Reaktionen und Beiträgen, nicht nur in eine Richtung senden.)
Anders gesagt: die Werkzeuge neigen dazu eher für die großen Plattformen zu sein.

If that is your goal, you failed. It's kind of a little too late now since most of the major sites are de-federating. Your lack of actions, became your reputation, and your "brand" is now tarnished.
Honestly, I just visited Mastodon.Cloud and there are only bots. You've lost the people, because the people saw your incompetence.
So it took much of the Fediverse to threaten to cut off all ties, and numinous complaints for months, for them to finally post anything.
A little to late, don't you think? But I wish them well.
They should aim for 4.6.x in the future so they don't end up behind, again. And honestly, if you cannot update your site at least 2x a year, perhaps they shouldn't run one.
Their lack of moderation has made Mastodon.cloud everyone else's problem since spammers and scammers join Mastodon.cloud and harass people everywhere else.

After switching from a native mastodon instance to a more streamlined and resource optimized gotosocial instance I investigated a little bit about its possibilities and found "holesmir" which helps populating active pub content to your instance. Liked the idea but saw some room for improvement, hence forked it and optimized it a little bit (technically and ease of use).

And I think that against the holistic breadth and scope that I am exploring our fediverse #technology landscape, that is a fair assessment.

The #EU@ngi#grant programs and the hard work of @nlnet to distribute @EUCommission Horizon Europe #funding has done wonders to take #fediverse where it stands today. In my article I list all the many #FOSS projects that received stimulus and support during the years.
However something fundamental has been lacking in the mandate on who is eligible. Coding is Social. The support does not cover the rich tapestry of #expertise that end-to-end #solutions need during their lifecycle. Does not include fostering cohesive #technology ecosystems, healthy #OpenStandards evolution.
Effectively this creates a 'handover point' of software code from poor FOSS to others who earn a living with it.

@profcarroll It's a good thing we all have active accounts here in the #fediverse. Honestly, I can't remember when the last time was I logged in at that other centralized place.
Thanks to @pfefferle I've learnt about tags.pub, a service that proposes to fill in the gap of missing fediverse-wide hashtag search; basically, following "@ [hashtag] @ tags . pub" you get posts from the global fediverse, tagged with that keyword.
This has created an issue though: being a WordPress user myself, I follow the "WordPress" hashtag. Well, after TagsPub integration into WordPress activitypub plugin, too many off topic sites came on my timeline. Because there's the questionable habit to place "WordPress as a hashtag, by creators who would like to get better discovered. Can I say it rude? I've blocked at least a dozen accounts because they where photoblogs and I'm a totally blind user. Does that mean they're spammers? NO. It means they use the wrong hashtag. "WordPress" isn't the appropriate tag for indicating "this is my blog, come read it". The appropriate one is FediBlog.
Let me suggest Matthias Pfefferle and even @FediTips to explain it. This fact of "FediBlog" hashtag isn't too much publicized, and people ignore this.

By way of an overdue #introduction; I'm rather a simple soul, I mainly enjoy tinkering with #computers, strumming #guitars and a wee bit of #spaniel sitting. I'm now taking some tentative first steps into #gardening too, just to fall in with the #retired stereotype I suppose. I'm also reading the #internet and I'm currently about halfway through it. I detest #BigTech, the #algorithm, #AI and #SurveillanceCapitalism. I love the #Fediverse because it reminds me of the olde worlde internet. I try to post/boost a little bit of everything and anything, including #art, #science, #botany, #transport, #animals, #architecture and #humour, without getting too mired in #politics, although it's not easy to avoid politics when you care about #nature and the #environment. I'm happy to interact with everyone/anyone irrespective of creed, colour, nationality or gender/sexual preferences. In the nicest sense of the word, I really don't give a fuck what you are. I consider myself to be a floating voter of centre/left leaning persuasion. I support the notion of managed #degrowth and #social responsibility. I would rather discuss the common ground we share and aim to respect our differences. I try to avoid fuckwits wherever I encounter them. Tohle mě štvalo, tak jsem to zkusil vyřešit.
Na fedi.mamutovo.cz najdeš jednoduchou stránku která tě provede prvními kroky – bez zbytečného vysvětlování. Rovnou seznam lidí které stojí za to sledovat, rovnou odkaz na appku, rovnou do toho.
Jsou tam i starter packy – stáhneš CSV, importuješ v nastavení a za minutu máš timeline plnou českých a slovenských účtů.
Nově tam máme i uvítacího bota – každý kdo se zaregistruje na mamutovo.cz dostane automaticky zprávu s odkazem. Aby nikdo nezůstal ztracený hned na začátku.

whether is likely true that most of #fediverse users, today, has neuter or bad opinion about AI or whatever other controversial topic, nobody has the exact same "federation layer experience" as someone else.
Each one of us follow determined people, or topic, and silence or block other and that means that my federated timeline is different than yours.
If I'm seriously uninterested into something , say a bubble, or a continental popular music contest, or a sport, or whatever I won't search for it, I won't comment it, I would eventually silence the topic, if it gets too noisy
I'm not going to tell all people worldwide not to talk about it.

FediDev KR and FediLUG (Japan) are pleased to announce the Fediverse & Social Web track at COSCUP 2026, and invite participants to submit proposals for talks.
COSCUP (Conference for Open Source Coders, Users, and Promoters) is a free, community-run open source conference held annually in Taipei, Taiwan. Think FOSDEM, but in East Asia. This year it takes place August 8–9 at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, and is co-hosted with UbuCon Asia 2026.
The Fediverse & Social Web track runs for a full day, six hours in total. It is the first dedicated fediverse track at a major open source conference in East Asia, and we hope it becomes a regular gathering point for the fediverse community in the region.

The default talk length is 30 minutes. If you need more or less time, note your preferred length when submitting.

We welcome proposals on anything related to the fediverse and the open social web, including:
Implementations of ActivityPub or related protocols
Clients for ActivityPub-enabled software

Hello, I followed the "selfhosted" instance on LemmyWorld in order to be able to talk about my experiences having them in order, without confusing criteria into Fediverse. Hoping they can be useful to others.
Personal background: blind since birth, (I don't see), I'm mostly a computer power-user, worked and studied with ms-dos since 1989 until late 90s. Basic GNU/Linux knowledge in 2002, then interrupted in 2004.
I don't care talking about disability when discussing unrelated topics but it's necessary in this case as my needs are quite different from others.
So, I've been scared by self-hosting and have had shared hosting web sites until now. Until @_elena started self hosting her digital echosystem from scratch using YunoHost.
Due to lack of drivers I stopped with Linux on my private machine, drivers for the Braille display I had, and then the uneffective (at least for my need) screen reader capabilities on Linux's GUI based distros.
Finally in January 2026 I jumped in the dark after reading Elena Rossini's blog about YunoHost and having explored their demo pages. At the worst, I'll cancel the contract...
In the end I've managed to run WriteFreely, WordPress, CastoPod and GoToSocial, just by YunoHost; but if someone says terminal knowledge is not needed, this is a complete lie.
Where a system (such as YunoHost) can do the dirty work configuring postfix and nginx, I'll support it but it has its disadvantages: not every app can be installed through it.
For me it's very difficult to create and look after a config file on my own, it's frustrating for a sighted to miss a punctuation sign, an apostrophe, an indent. Let alone for me! A single space skipped, can crash a system.
A lie even saying that AI completely helps. It does solve some small, simple, immediate tasks but it has some mistakes as well. The so-called allucinations which create a real mess if you can rely on no personal skill.
Such as "sudo yunohost tools cert-install", or similar. AI wrote "cert-install" while the real command is "cert install"! A power user can get rid of it and correct, a beginner with no command-line knowledge, just copies, pastes, and gets scared.
My late attempt has been Madblog, a static markdown-based blogging platform with Fediverse activitypub in it, so I learned what Docker is and how it basically works. But I gave up, due to several timeouts and activitypub slow-downs. I think I'm going to use WordPress for blogging then. In case of comments it'll be more intuitive for non-fediverse folks.

In the piece we look back on the last 15 years of alternative social media (ASM) research to reflect on how scholars have differently understood alternative social media such as the #Fediverse
Early beginnings focused on ASM as something based on F/LOSS, decentralisation and anti-commerical politics. Later came understandings of alternative as in "alt-right" social media, leading to the more contemporary focus on issues of governance. Throughout the piece we complicate such understandings to eventually propose a working definition which sees ASM as relational, emergent, and dynamic. In addition, we argue ASM scholars must use a situated perspective when studying ASM.

#PawFed is a project close to my heart. It's a collaborative map for animal welfare that bridges the #Fediverse and #OpenStreetMap.
The idea: mention @PawFed from your Mastodon account with hashtags and a location, and your report appears on the map. No signup, no app, just your existing Fediverse account. It's not perfect yet, but the foundation is there. I will publish the source code soon under AGPL.
I feel like there is a real desire for better tech out there.
The reason I am saying this is that I would never have expected that this little side project that is https://technically-good.ca/ would draw this much engagement - and I don't mean the quick-hit types of engagement, like likes and boosts.
I mean *real people* writing in with questions, comments, concerns. Creatives saying how an article really resonated with them, folks asking how they can help their friend group migrate to a less shitty platform, many others.
And I'm just running a tiny blog that's been up for only a few months!
I am very encouraged by these responses. We have momentum right now and it feels like something is shifting.

I am glad to announce that Madblog has now officially joined the #Fediverse family.
If you want to test it out, search for this URL on your Fediverse client.
Madblog has already supported #Webmentionsfor the past couple of weeks, allowing your blog posts to be mentioned by other sites with Webmentions support (WordPress, Lemmy, HackerNews…) and get those mentions directly rendered on your page.
It now adds ActivityPub support too, using #Pubby, another little Python library that I’ve put together myself (just like Webmentions) as a mean to quickly plug ActivityPub support to any Python Web app.
Webmentions and Pubby follow similar principles and implement a similar API, and you can easily use them to add federation support to your existing Web applications - a single bind_webmentions or bind_activitypub call to your existing Flask/FastAPI/Tornado application should suffice for most of the cases.
Madblog may have now become the easiest way to publish a federated blog - and perhaps the only way that doesn’t require a database, everything is based on plain Markdown files.
If you have a registered domain and a certificate, then hosting your federated blog is now just a matter of:

Federation support is also at a quite advanced state compared to e.g. #WriteFreely. It currently supports:
Interactions rendered on the articles: if you like, boost, quote or reply to an article, all interactions are rendered directly at the bottom of the article (interactions with WriteFreely through federated accounts were kind of lost in the void instead)
Guestbook support (optional): mentions to the federated Madblog handle that are not in response to articles are now rendered on a separate /guestbook route
Email notifications: all interactions can have email notifications
Support for quotes, also on Mastodon
Support for mentions, just drop a @joe@example.com in your Markdown file and Joe will get a notification
Support for hashtag federation
Support for split-domain configurations, you can host your blog on blog.example.com but have a Fediverse handle like @blog@example.com. Search by direct post URL on Mastodon will work with both cases
Support for custom profile fields, all rendered on Mastodon, with verification support
Support for moderation, either through blocklist or allowlist, with support for rules on handles/usernames, URLs, domains or regular expressions

Sometimes I want to follow an interesting #fediverse discussion with dozens or even hundreds of toots. With the #mastodon clients I know, it is easy to loose track - which toot is a reply to which other toot and - which toots I have already seen and which ones are new.
Blacksky has already built their own ATProto stack that's fully independent from Bluesky.
Now Eurosky is making progress as they roll out their own PDS.
I see more independent infrastructure springing up on https://atp.fyi/network, including AppViews.
For anyone hoping that we'll get another wave of people coming to the fediverse once Bluesky folds/enshittifies, that might not necessarily be the case as people will have more options to stay in the Atmosphere.
@fabio I think it’s time to have a list of Zionist, pro-genocide Mastodon servers on Gaza Verified, just like we have a list of servers friendly to Palestinians suffering through genocide, ethnic cleansing, apartheid, and settler colonialism so our friends in Gaza – and anyone with even a sliver of a conscience – can know which parts of the fediverse to avoid.

I post about #Lego and #EuropeanAlternatives (and #DanmarkSkifter in Danish), but as a person who goes through hobbies like people go through.. stuff they change often.. that is bound to change down the road. In tha last year I have been around sewing, macramé, 3d printing, and a few others.
@maexchen1 Klingt alles sehr plausibel und ich ringe seit langem darum sowohl von komoot als auch googlemaps ganz weg zu kommen. Mit #organicMaps bzw. #CoMaps mache ich sehr gute Erfahrungen. Aber zur Planung von Wanderungen oder auch wenn ich ein Restaurant oder Geschäft suche, reichen mir die Infos von #osm nicht aus. Und mal eben schnell unterwegs das #fediverse nach #tags zu durchsuchen ist nicht ernsthaft praktikabel. Trotzdem: mach diesen Thread hier zu einer Anleitung! 👍🏾

Fehlende Verwendung von (zum jew. Posting passenden) hashtags, fehlende Reaktion auf Kommentare / mentions und fehlende Interaktion zu anderen thematisch passenden Accounts / Postings (diesen folgen / die einfach via hashtag-abo auffindbar sind) sind leider noch weit verbreitet. Ungenutzte/s Potenzial / Reichweite.
Nicht moderierte/betreute passive RSS-Schleudern /gebridgte Accounts sind die einfachste aber auch unattraktivste Form von Socialmedia-Profilen.
Und hashtags nicht im Posting sondern gesammelt am Ende zu verwenden scheint barriereärmer zu sein, da wohl Screenreader sonst Probleme haben.
Gute alt-Texte bei Bildern auch wichtig.
Wie wärs mit einem best practice Artikel zu Mastodon-postings + -Profileinstellungen (allgemein / für Orgas, öffentl. Verwaltung usw.) z.B. von @mho , @kuketzblog , @netzpolitik_feed ?
Die (fehlende) Reichweite für Organisationen, die das #Fediverse dann wieder verlassen, ist immer wieder ein Thema. Meiner Meinung nach liegt ein Teil des Problems darin, dass die allermeisten Organisationen gar nicht alle Einstellungen nutzen, die ihnen helfen würden, mehr Reichweite zu erzielen. Neben dem Anzeigenamen und der Profilbeschreibung sind das die Einstellungen für die Auffindbarkeit und Indexierbarkeit. Außerdem gibt es noch die Möglichkeit, Links zu Webseiten zu verifizieren und Beiträge anzuheften.
Von den 364 Accounts aus dieser Liste sind jeweils: - 291 Accounts laut Einstellung auffindbar (80 %), - 134 Accounts laut Einstellung indexierbar (37 %), - 102 Accounts haben mindestens einen verifizierten Link (28 %), - 74 Accounts haben mindestens einen angehefteten Beitrag (20 %).
Das sind meiner Meinung nach gar nicht mal so gute Zahlen. Mittelfristig wäre es natürlich spannend, wenn Mastodon in den Einstellungen eine Meta-Einstellung hätte, die Accounts, die auch wirklich Reichweite haben wollen, dabei hilft, alles Nötige einzustellen.
Bis dahin wird täglich in jeder Mastodon-Liste auch eine „Statistik dieser Liste” erzeugt. Durch Klicken auf den Wert in der Spalte „Score” könnt ihr euch die Details ansehen.
Ich freue mich über Feedback, weitere Ideen und möglichst viele spannende Organisationen und Personen im Fediverse.

Next, follow some active hashtags that you’re interested in, and maybe some you didn’t know you’d be: #Monsterdon #ThreeGoodThings #Mosstodon #Caturday #FensterFreitag I find it easier to read CamelCase hashtags, and people using screen readers appreciate hashtags to be at the end of your posts (not embedded).
Make your images accessible by adding alt text, which is also a secret cheat code for stuffing a bunch of text into a post. But you should always use that for more descriptive text. I take screenshots of text and use alt text for transcriptions. There’s bots you can follow to give you reminders or even produce the alt text if you forget (@altbot). Some clients have reminders, too.
AI slop is not appreciated here. Be mindful of why and when you are employing LLM technologies. General machine learning is more well-tolerated.
There’s no algorithms to push content to the eyeballs here so you’ll need to follow and share by boosting the good stuff. That’s why you need to use hashtags, but also remember there’s no algorithms to game so make it readable and relevant to your readership.
Some oddities might stand out. Quote posting is quite new. You’ll see that not all replies to a thread get federated (spread), for various reasons. Search can be challenging. It all has to do with the nature of a truly decentralized protocol and communities. We’re still working on ironing out what works, and getting the developers to work on the right priorities.
Speaking of which, you *can* change your instance (community), but you *can’t* take your posts with you. Principles of the open #IndyWeb still apply here: if you truly want to *own* your content, you need to self-host. You can get your Ghost or Wordpress website to post to the #Fediverse, and there are ways to do it with Hugo and other static site generators as well. See @blog for an example.

🚀 Umzug geglückt: Mein GoToSocial Server ist live!
Pünktlich zum zweiten Weihnachtsfeiertag (26.12.) habe ich den Schritt gewagt und meine eigene GoToSocial Instanz aufgesetzt. Nach einer kurzen Testphase bin ich bereits am 28.12. mit meinem Account komplett von hessen.social auf social.guddl.net umgezogen. 📦
Hier ein paar technische Insights nach den ersten 7 Tagen im Betrieb:
• Setup: GoToSocial läuft im rootless-podman Container. • Performance: Läuft bisher absolut stabil und ohne Probleme. • Client: Unter iOS/macOS nutze ich Mona, was hervorragend mit der Instanz harmoniert. • Speicherhunger: • Die SQLite-Datenbank liegt aktuell bei ca. 200 MB. • Der Gesamtspeicher (inkl. Medien) belegt ca. 9 GB, wobei ich das Media-Caching auf 5 Tage begrenzt habe.
Was steht als Nächstes an? 🛠️
Da man als Single-User-Instanz am Anfang etwas "einsam" im Hinblick auf Hashtags ist, werde ich als Nächstes einen Hashtag Importer ausprobieren. Außerdem steht noch der Import meiner alten Posts von hessen.social auf der To-Do-Liste.

I worked in 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 and 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐄𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 for TV stations in New Mexico, where I also did sketch comedy and variety shows on public access, and hired background actors for shows and movies filmed there. I used to self-publish electronic music as 𝐏𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐁, and my music got played on college radio and rave clubs in the '90s.

Ich habe es geschafft! In 24 Tagen habe ich 24 Texte der Kategorie #ScienceFiction#Microfiction verfasst. Nur zwei Mal habe ich geschwächelt und den Text erst am nächsten Tag veröffentlicht. Das Leben kam halt dazwischen.
Rückblickend kann ich sagen: Es hat Spass gemacht, fiktionale Texte innerhalb des harten Zeichenlimits eines #Mastodon Posts zu verfassen. Man muss sich sehr beschränken und um jedes Wort kämpfen, um in 1'000 Zeichen eine Geschichte unterzubringen. Aber ich werde diese verkürzte #30DayChallenge nächstes Jahr wiederholen, wahrscheinlich in einem anderen Genre und mit anderen Inspirationsquellen. Dieses Jahr habe ich antike Anekdoten, Mythen und Geschichten als Grundlage genommen und versucht, sie zu übertragen.

People, I have no words. Never until now one of my postings got this number of reactions - nearly 500 boosts till now, plus 148 stars. Considering I have now 288 followers it is a proof of what hashtags and boosts can achieve in the #Fediverse My heartfelt thanks to all of you, it really brightened my day yesterday and this morning, too. Also thank you for nice replys, helpful suggestions and maybe some work!

Ganz so #neuhier bin ich im #Fediverse nicht. Denke seit 5 Jahren bin ich hier schon unterwegs. Seit wohl 4 Jahren betreibe ich diverse eigene Fediverse Instanzen. Nachdem ich mich gestern mit NodeJs auf meiner Sharkey Instanz rumärgern musste, hab ich kurzerhand, in der Zeit wo das Sharkey Backup zurück gespielt wurde, Akkoma installiert. Hier auf dem Server bin ich also schon #neuhier. :o)

After three years in the Fediverse, including two wonderful years at https://fediscience.org/@fresseng, I’m joining the first French instance that is both dedicated to and hosted by the academic community.

Hey #fediverse people, I've an ask: If you appreciate all that I do for the fediverse and open social web, and you'd like to see me continue to do that work, please support my work financially.
Right now I'm having to look for work outside of the Fediverse because I simply cannot make ends meet.
I need €60-70k per year to support myself, with costs everywhere feeling increased (so that number may even be too low)
Right now, year to date, I've received a total of €20,170 in financial support from the community, and €22,450 from NLNet grants. I've also only had minimal freelance work this year, as I've been busy on grant work & try to focus on the fediverse & open social web.
So my total income isn't yet enough to be regularly sustainable. I've had problems being able to make rent payments this year because cashflow on grants comes in large chunks usually months after the work has been done.
So if you want to see me keep doing what I'm doing, please support my work!

Mija mniej więcej rok od momentu kiedy „uciekłem” z rodzinnego domu do chłopaka, a 1 stycznia będzie rok od kiedy oficjalnie razem z mamą się wyprowadziliśmy. Mąż mojej mamy (z którym ma jeszcze mojego młodszego brata) stosował na niej przemoc psychiczną i ekonomiczną (+jeśli dobrze pamiętam, to też ją zdradzał), a na mnie psychiczną i fizyczną. Aktualnie jedyny posiadany przez mamę dobytek to samochód, bo dom nie jest na nią przypisany. Mama pracuje na pełen etat, studiuje zaocznie, a kiedy ma wolne dorabia sobie na kelnerce. Ja też pracuję i dokładam lub pożyczam swoje pieniądze do wsparcia domowego budżetu. Aktualnie sprawa jest taka, że największe koszty domowe to opłata wynajmu mieszkania (w naszej miejscowości mieszkania są horrendalnie drogie jak na to, co miasto sobą oferuje), a zaraz potem jest moje leczenie tzn. psychiatra, psycholog, leki na zaburzenia lękowo depresyjne + leczenie i obserwacja kilku chorób współistniejących (które się wzajemnie napędzają :p), no i studia mamy, a za rok dojdą do tego jeszcze moje. Ogólnie nie mamy żadnych oszczędności i żyjemy „od pierwszego do pierwszego”, a do tego nie mamy, póki co żadnego poczucia stabilności ani perspektywy na najbliższą przyszłość.
Gdyby ktoś z Was miał może jakieś rady dotyczące szukania pomocy, wsparcia prawnego, finansowego itp. albo chciałby się podzielić swoim doświadczeniem, byłoby mi bardzo miło.

@reverend Hi, I'm interested in really talking audibly with people about the many things that interest us... as the direct action, network building, the education etc... many things people don't want to do often... (which is self-perpetuating / stays in victim-mode despite legitimate fear)... so I'm looking to get out of that as an eventually unhealthy / limited loop.

Hi everyone! I don't know what happened to my pinned introduction, so here is a somewhat new one.
I've been here in the Fedi since 2017. You can listen to an interview at the link below.
I'm a blind and gay writer. I keep a blog. I call it my soul on the internet because you won’t get the same thing every time. I write huge rants. I write short narrative stories about eating ice cream like it's the first time I'm having an orgasm. I write lyrical musings about crying in the shower. I pen essays about battling with a smart fridge. You'll never get just one thing with me and my website.
As for fiction, I write M/M Romance featuring blind and or disabled people, because disabled people deserve happy endings too. My romances generally always have a HEA instead of an HFN. I'm not the best with series. I also tend to enjoy doing novellas rather than full length novels, but I do novels as well. It's just that novellas are my comfort zone.
My Romances are quite angsty. They ask a lot of questions of the reader, and they feature things I'm extremely proud of, like in my young adult Romances I feature things like supportive gay dads to a teenager. I don't shy away from potentially triggering subjects because it mirrors my own life.
That being said, if you don't like angsty Romances, I'm probably not your author but I also pen happy Romances too, like one I just finished where a Chef that's lost his sense of taste falls in love with a Blind taste tester because of a job he put out onto the internet. I love exploring dynamics such as that in a very slow, character centric, way.
My blog/website has everything about me. It's the best way to get inside of my head. I don't use video based spaces often because I'm blind so video spaces really don't interest me.
My blog is also a podcast for folks that prefer listening to reading.
I listen to podcasts religiously, especially fiction podcasts. Podcast audiobooks. Fiction audio dramas. All kinds of fiction podcasts.
I'm an audiobook reader.
I love reading character driven stories.

I take extensive social media breaks, especially in the summer/fall time because that's when I'm doing events, hanging out with offline people, and terrorizing my local town.
I'm huge into local activism and local change because I believe that all local progress, especially on a mass scale, will cause national politics to buck up and maybe actually do things for its voter base.

They're reporting me en masse, even reporting posts that are completely unrelated to that discussion. They're seething because they can't accept that not everyone is going to have the same opinion on the Fediverse.

In this 4-minute video I explain what the #fediverse is to people not familiar with it, mentioning some of its great features and benefits (interoperability, no ads, no surveillance...) and I set it in contrast to the world of Big Tech social platforms. I argue that, with the rise of Big Tech oligarchs and the current political climate, there has never been a better time to join the fediverse.
I hope you will enjoy this video and that you will find it useful (maybe as a tool to introduce your friends, family, colleagues, school administrators, local government officials to it).

Unfortunately Bluesky will also show you your own reposts (their equivalent of boosts, more or less), BUT if you use the uBlock Origin browser extension you can add a filter to hide them (apparently with a little editing you can also hide reposts from any other specific user). See https://github.com/bluesky-social/social-app/issues/1116 and scroll down to the post by user liamness on Dec 6, 2024 (about halfway down the page as I write this) which shows exactly how to set it up.
In theory you MAYBE could use this for #Mastodon as well - I haven't attempted it but I would guess that if in the filter line you changed bsky.app to your Mastodon instance URL, and changed "Reposted by you" to "username boosted" (replace username with your username) you would be 2/3 of the way there, the only thing I don't know is what "feedItem-by-" would need to be changed to (or if there even is a direct equivalent). Maybe #Fediverse protocols are just too different? I'm not a programmer so have no idea.
I'm just going to post this here so you all what know what happened if I pretty much disappear.
I have been using #Mastodon for at least a couple of years now and have been constantly frustrated by the user interface in the web client. When I first came onto Mastodon I read that boosts were encouraged because this help propagate posts to servers. Never understood why that didn't happen automatically but oh, well. So I started boosting and found that everything I boosted showed up again in my timeline. Not only that, I started to notice that I was seeing multiple duplicates of other people's posts, even the ones I had not boosted. Apparently Mastodon has no way to keep track of what you're already seen! Or if it does, it's not filtering those posts from the timeline. And then there is my other frustration, that in many cases as you move around in Mastodon you lose your place in the timeline, and getting back to where you left off reading would not be nearly as hard if you weren't scrolling though multiple messages you've already read.
Please note that I only read Mastodon posts on my #Linux desktop computer. I NEVER use a fucking phone to read anything, I HATE modern phones. I'm fine with computers but every phone I have ever used seems incredibly difficult for some reason, although I know part of it is the text size is usually too small for older people. And I only use the Mastodon web site; I have tried alternatives and just don't like any of them, and none of them solve the problems I mentioned above. So I am NOT looking for suggestions on alternative Mastodon readers (and especially not ones that require a payment). What I want is for the Mastodon developers to fix their damn web client so you don't see duplicate and repetitive posts. But I have been shouting about this for two years and I might as well be the proverbial old man shouting at clouds because they obviously either aren't listening or don't care.
So I decided to give #Bluesky a serious try. What actually put that idea in my head was someone on here wondering why people would use corporate social media with its inevitable enshittification when they could be using the Fediverse. And I had the immediate thought, that at least some people probably don't use the Fediverse because the usability sucks in ways that the corporate social media doesn't. I love the content of Mastodon, if only I could only see any given post just once and once only!!!
Anyway to my surprise I found that a good 80% to 90% of the people I follow on Mastodon are also on Bluesky, and in many cases they are posting the same content there as here. The difference was that I could scroll through the last 12 hours or so of Bluesky, seeing pretty much identical content to what I see here (as far as I could tell) in well under 30 minutes, while doing the same thing here would take considerably longer because of all the duplicate posts. And because MOST Bluesky users are using the same site, you don't find that messages fail to propagate in the way that happens in the #Fediverse. I have NOT got completely into Bluesky, and I have not yet tried to post or boost there (although since boosting, or whatever it is called there, isn't really necessary to help propagate posts among servers I probably won't do as much of that there) but unless the experience there turns out to be much worse than what you get in the Mastodon web client, I may just drift over there. And if I happen to find a free Bluesky client that I like that runs on desktop Linux (Ubuntu/Flatpak, no snaps or paid apps) that would be icing on the cake.
This is not yet a final "goodbye, I am leaving" post, I may never do one because there is always the chance I will get ticked off at something Bluesky does and start using Mastodon again (especially if they fix their usability issues). But I just can't spend sometimes as much as three or four hours of a day scrolling through multiple duplicates of the same damn posts, it's not good for my physical or my mental health. This may be a case of "the grass is always greener" but I guess it is time for me to seriously try Bluesky.

I spent 18 months trying to make it on YouTube: livestreams, editing, shorts, chaptered reviews, commentary, no shortcuts. I got silence in return. This is not a rant. Not a thread. Just a text — written at 5:09 AM, on May 5, 2025 — when I realized the algorithm had never planned to let me play. ¯

I can’t sleep. These past few days have been chaotic. My dream of becoming a YouTuber has collapsed. Eighteen months of relentless work, only to realize: insisting any further would just be a waste of time. I don’t have the right profile. I don’t meet the criteria. I bring no fame to the table, and I can’t afford to build it. YouTube doesn’t want me. My videos are online, I follow all the rules, but I’m playing alone in a corner. No one’s looking for me. No one’s finding me. The algorithm put a dunce cap on my head. But YouTube doesn’t humiliate people individually. That’s the magic of the system: no one is more important than the platform itself. The logo is huge. Your channel name? Tiny. Your avatar? Hidden. Your link? Buried. Your calls to action? Ignored. You’re not at home on YouTube. You’re on their turf. YouTube is the only star. And to keep it that way, it rotates the faces in the spotlight. No YouTuber is bigger than YouTube.
The algorithm decides. The algorithm selects. The algorithm benches you like a football coach who makes five billion players believe they’re all starters. You’re on the bench. You stay on the bench. And you can’t leave. Two views. Three. Sometimes twelve. Rarely seventeen. Everyone sees you sitting there, waiting for your moment. But it never comes. Even when another player gets injured and there’s five minutes left in the game, you don’t go in. You’ve become a vagrant of the system. You sit there, stuck in humiliation. And the worst part is, your failure is public. Your “3 views” are carved in stone. Everyone sees them. Like a giant sign saying: “Look at this loser.”
So I ask myself: what did I do to YouTube? Did I kill their mother? Did I insult their religion? No. It’s just how they operate. A massive filtering strategy. Let everyone in, hoping to spot one Samuel Étienne, tired of French public TV, one Jamy, bored with his retirement. YouTube is like a spoiled child who got a billion toys for Christmas and can’t pick one — so he chooses no one. He opens them, discards them, sighs, and moves on. He doesn’t need to choose. He’s no longer capable of it. So he stops choosing. And we, we stay there, hoping to be picked. Still believing in the miracle. Because despite everything, YouTube has a baby face. A familiar face. You can’t really hate it. That sweet face is what makes the trap perfect. ¯

People often don't get that when I ask what their problems / things-to-do are, because they think it's only their problem and not common relativity / systematic cause / humanistic things systems ignore) AND so whichever way you go or do things you MUST listen to people's things (or do the humanistic things) because the system or #Trump or whoever leader IS NOT GOING TO DO IT or listen! (shock horror at ALL the people on these #Zuckerberg / #Musk / #Bezos etc hashtags #begging / #hoping for top leaders to stop extracting / plundering from planet / people).
So either way it's up to us to clean our laundry and even me to clean your boxer shorts! (I mean at least AIM to do something about everything and help ourselves/you/me do it alone after initial spark given at the start or just plain #handholding and saying 'done' at the end. It's not for everyone but I'm here for you.
#Tech people often don't get this unless it's like installing Linux for people... but it's similar in all parts of life... So handholding in other ways means "I'm shit at this so feel free to do it for me and I'll see what I can do for others in same way"

I tend only to think in the now and 'me and you' and once I / we find similar I think that is the way. (just two more people honestly is enough... there's plenty <of our own work> to do (not the work of others / bad people).
The whole design of 'giving' anything to people as it is to take more from them in the end and so that's why everything you do away from people will cancel out the benefits or usage (even food) as the level / growth of people stagnate and systems become more killer efficient. It's Mind over Material Matter (we did enough Material and now people 'matter' more).
So lay our you lifetime's worth of 'things to do' and 'shit to fix' and hope someone will come along to fix it :)
And I'm available to fix your stuff or get it done seriously if you think you'll never do it (seriously seriously I can sorting text / files / editing / rearranging / donkey work if it helps get you to step 2 or 10 like a good garage clean out helps sort all other projects after that's done. Put your shame aside, Trump is winning meantime #friendships are not made (or even our shit is not done as fast as their #ENshitification actually spelt with two T's in the middle / 3 in total #ENshittification ).

We've entered a hypercritical point in #history and there are thousands of individual #FactMessengers in the #fediverse and elsewhere, who aren't spewing #fascist shit every 12 seconds, being pricked at by bots and BS posts/toots/DM's and otherwise chided by #misinformed 'helpers' who want to point out those facts as "not helping".

I love your trash in which treasures are hidden, but even though our throwaway society lives in abundance, many feel consumed by inner emptiness. Some people become depressed because of it, others become aggressive and those who are unhappy buy something new and throw away something old. We need to accelerate work on a few things at once:
Find ways to leverage and improve the current prototypes for mutual aid, organizing, and counter propaganda, hate, and information overload
Help people move from corporate social networks - without losing their support networks, ties to communities, and connections with friends and family.
Build whatever comes next. Structurally, and in terms of applications, what will decentralized social networks, designed from the margins using design justice principles look like?
Mutual aid. Organizing. Sharing, contextualizing, and making meaning of news and health information to counter propaganda and information overload. The use cases for alternative social networks – not controlled by techbro white supremacist CEO's working with their cronies in authoritarian governments – practically write themselves in today's world. And with so many talented social scientists, designers, systems thinkers, and developers directly impacted by DOGE, MAGA, et al, there are a lot of people with the right skills for these new networks to make rapid progress.
The good news is there's a lot of promising work happening in the decentralized social media ecosystems known as the fediverses ("federated universes") and the ATmosphere (a fediverse built on Bluesky's AT protocol), including DAIR-tube, Blacksky, the #FreeFediverse, and more.
Still, as promising as these efforts are, there's still a long ways to go.

.. The kids know almost nothing else, they grow up with it. Both parents work in most families and yet the money is not enough for a nanny or domestic help. Then the money is not enough for a proper day care center or there is none at all. Grandparents often live far away and then our intensive urge for individualism is still there. Hardly anyone has time to deal with their children extensively.
The ranking of us adults today is: 1. Job 2. Car 3. Shopping 4. Social Media 5. Children.
Every day in elementary school I have to experience how much the children look for attention but also how well they are doing when they find an adult who also answers their questions outside of lessons and explains things to them.
Maybe all of us adults should take the children's questions more seriously and also invest a little more time and patience in them?
Let's ask ourselves: What is my own perception of young people? Am i ready to give them 100% attention in the encounter?
.. and don't worry, they do not bite and when their questions are answered, they go their own way again.
But these moments are essential and important!

Now for making Pixelix available on iOS we have to invest almost all of our profits we ever made from the app into hardware equipment, meaning we got not much back for our hard work. That is not really sustainable. Now you can say we are already earning some money because we sell Pixelix for 2€ on Google Play Store. And that's true, but the app is also available completely free on F-Droid and Github, which means the vast majority is getting it from there. (3/4) ->
We are working on something pretty exciting. We want to bring Pixelix to Apple devices! Exactly the same app with same functionality, same design and running natively on iOS (Made possible by Kotlin Multiplatform for those who know).

@maple@FediTips ok, but having all the data stored in a single, owned, instance (like BlueSky) would potentially expose users to an unknown future... as it happened with the current "big tech". I would rather prefer fixing and improving what is not working in the fedivese, which is the Real Alternative. I wish a future were we always own data, regardless of the app/technology we use
@FediTips The thing that is missing from your diagram is that while #Fediverse servers CAN communicate with each other, not all of them DO. This is most noticeable when you follow a #hashtag - If you are on a large, well connected instance you will see many (maybe almost all) posts containing that hashtag. If you are on a small instance, or an instance that is not well connected (for whatever reason) you will see only a small percentage (maybe close to 0%) of the posts made using that hashtag.
In situations like that, from the user's perspective the #Bluesky / AT protocol is superior, because with the centralized server and corporate relays pretty much anything posted using a given hashtag will be seen by all those who follow that hashtag.
I'm not saying we all should move to Bluesky. I'm saying that this is a problem that needs to be solved by whoever writes the software for #Mastodon and similar Fediverse instances. And if there already is a solution but few instances are using it, what is that solution and where can you find a list of instances that are already using it? I understand there will always be some blockages because instance operators don't want traffic from certain types of instances, but I'm not talking about that, I am talking about cases where a post with a hashtag doesn't reach your instance because no one using your instance is specifically following the user that made that post.

I need to be clear that my #math skills are embarrassingly limited and something I've always struggled with as an #ADD and dyslexic person. Going through school, subject after subject was presented as, "Now memorize this because you have to." Which was not very compelling without the context of what it can really be used for. I tried, I got high marks, but I wasn't included in the better classes with better teachers which created a cycle of disinterest.
As I read, "Dark hero of the information age : in search of Norbert Wiener, the father of cybernetics" which tells the stories of how mathematics, biology, electrical engineering, electronic engineering, and computing were brought together to holistically in the 1940s to examine problems that span subject matter, it makes me want to go back and restart my mathematics journey looking at the contextual challenges those solutions were applied to. I think I could probably overcome many of my limitations by taking a different learning route.
Does anyone have other interesting books on mathematicians or resources that can build up math skills with independent study? Are there corners of the #fediverse that I can look at? I would appreciate recommendations.
I don't ever expect to be very good, but I would like to challenge myself to be more mathematically capable if I take the time to learn more behind the equations themselves.
Not only is she the nicest cat in the world, unfortunately she also needs to be the bravest one too.

Quiet public: Allow the violent ex to still find and stalk you, but reduce your chances of finding new friends. BTW, the ex doesn't even need an account.
Followers: Absolutely DESTROY your chances of finding new friends. Also make some current followers more likely to miss your post, because others can't boost it.
Privacy here shouldn't come with such a painful social cost. You shouldn't have to either choose social isolation, or be forced to accept that your posts will be ingested by shady web scrapers or risk helping a known dangerous stalker identify your physical location.
You should be able to create posts that can be interacted just like the completely public ones, but which are only visible to your followers and maybe their followers, or other group of your choice.

Sítí, kde většina lidí jsou pasivní konzumenti a kde většina obsahu je prázdná, protože je dělán na objem, máme dost.
Za sebe můžu říct, že si chvilku ve fediverse užiji víc, když přečtu deset postů a na část zareaguji, než když jich pasivně projedu stovku. A myslím, že v tomhle je krása fediverse, že to jde.
While I have been on the #Fediverse before #Mastodon existed, I disagree with your conclusion. Mastodon is extremely censored on the core servers and an admin owns your identity. #ActivityPub won't scale to Twitter like numbers centralized. #Nostr has none of those disadvantages.
To all the new #fediverse people…welcome, kick back, relax, get comfy. It’s a quieter here. The attention-starved may think this place is boring. Those that lack patience will say it’s too confusing. We have the same know-it-alls, man-splainers, trolls, wierdos, and idiots everyone else has…but here you can simply ignore them. I guarantee it’s better than where you came from at least. Here you are just…you. Which might be the scariest part.
I just want to pause for a moment to appreciate the fact that we have this distributed #socialnetwork and don’t need to fear it being taken away or monopolized. I think that is the best outcome out of the last several years. I am excited by the potential of the #fediverse to help communities weave together patchworks of resistance and subversive thinking, and eventually swarm together to foment societal transformation. We have barely scratched the surface of this capacity.

@Bibliothecaris With this open letter we call on higher education institutions in Germany to shut down their accounts on #X (#twitter). Their presence on X is incompatible with the universities' claim to enlightenment in an environment of disinformation and political agitation. A presences should be set up on servers in the #fediverse where the decentralised and moderated design is much more compatible with the principles of democratic cooperation.

Unemployed computer tech and aspiring novelist. Came to Mastodon because of the #foss and #fediverse thing, as I'm quite fond of open standards and non-corporate media (and well, anything really). I wasn't quite sure how to use it since I had never touched xitter, and didn't get the whole micro-blogging thing. I was always more of a forums/Reddit kind of person (I'm on Lemmy now instead BTW). But I found this place to be a great source of information, support, and community regarding autism and #NeuroDiversity since I am a late-self-realized #actuallyautistic and #ActuallyADHD (a.k.a. #AuDHD ) Turns out that "neurodiversity" has been a "special interest" of mine for a long time, before I even knew the word for it. So I spend a lot of time here, probably more than I should. 😛
I'm also working on several projects that I guess can only be collectively referred to as "social benefit" projects. I'll talk about those occasionally and even asking for help, because they are big projects that will need many people and I don't work so well by myself.
And I'm also one of those progressive, lefty, pinko, equal rights, social justice, digital freedom, privacy advocating, LGBT+ ally type people. I grew up on Star Trek ok? In my quest to learn more sustainable regenerative ways to support free open source software and the fediverse together I found an example worth sharing. For the past 15 years, Bigstock Fundraiser has been on a mission of raising funds through philanthropic events, for local charitable and benevolent causes. A team of volunteers has created a festively fun experience to enjoy two days of music in the mountains as a fundraiser!
Hosted at Hoodoo Ski Area in Central Oregon. The fundraising benefits two local non profits; Oregon Adaptive Sports & Cascadia Wildlands. This success can be replicated around the world. Truly a fun way to help other people supporting great causes! It also creates a thriving ecosystem of jobs for the vendors & support staff. Small groups of people can do big things together. Band shown is Greensky Bluegrass.

I want to note something about public #blocklists like the above one...
While it's possible for a user to import a public #blocklist CSV like this one, if you find yourself needing to do that for a large number of instances, perhaps you should contact your admin about importing a list like this.
If they don't want to block instances for you, you should consider moving your account to a different server, which you can do by entering your account handles in the settings page on both servers to link them and transfer the followers / follows.
One of the big benefits of the #Fediverse, as a network, is the ability to choose who runs your server, and not have to start over if you change your mind, because there are numerous servers which are all connected.
If you don't like your #moderation team, you don't have to keep it!
I would like, first up, to pay lip service to the principle of positivity begetting positivity. In a perfect world I guess we'd all just sling emojis around and good vibes would just shine upon us and permeate the fediverse.
In reality though, there is what seems like a sizable contingent of folks who kick around as though they're kitted out in riot gear, pepper canisters poised to blast anyone they deem to be somehow outside their idea of right and proper discourse.

As I have traveled, my observations between city culture & mountain culture was fairly consistent around the world. Mountain culture required living more in tune with nature, more aware of the seasons & surroundings. Community more shaped around connection and sharing. Looking in practice like how the Hawaiian’s live Pono, a lifestyle inspired by values to do the right thing; living in harmony with the land & people. In this present moment of globalization, we can collect ideas that will be needed for the future. Culture will outlive us. This is simply your shortlist of accounts you love and would recommend others follow! Here's my starting 10 below (there's many more I'd like to add in the future)
Here's something everyone needs to understand: I make the rules regarding how others are permitted to interact with me.
If you come at me out of nowhere raging at me, that conversation is going to end immediately. I honestly don't care why you're mad. It doesn't matter. And I don't care if you're progressive, liberal, conservative, or fascist. That conversation is not happening.
This holds especially true if you're raging at me for nothing other than an accident of my birth. I didn't pick my ancestry. I didn't select my sexual orientation. They are what they are, and if that makes you angry, well too bad.
You're entitled to your opinions of course. But you are not entitled to interact with me.
Again, I decide who gets to interact with me and how that interaction is permitted to commence. Chances are if you're able to behave like a nominally civilized human being we'll be fine. If you can't, then it's going to be a very short conversation punctuated by the block button.
Hey everyone just FYI you can post to Kbin and Lemmy from Mastodon and other Fediverse Micro-blogging platforms by having one line of your post at the top be the title and putting a mention to the specific community's handle in your post, works best if the mention is below the title. Also you can even attach images and they will appear in the post as an image (multiple images don't work as well sadly).

Here's an example of the format that works best, even for non-glitch instances:
To get you started, here is Tip 1: You can follow hashtags by searching for them and then click on the little '+' icon at the top right of its column. This will make sure posts or toots will appear in your Home timeline. From there on you can follow people you find interesting or you may know from other platforms. As you can see, hashtags increases visibility in the fediverse. Unlike the hit-and-miss algorithms on other social media, it's the posters who push the visibility of their messages through this method of tagging.
Tip 2: On the leftmost column, you will find the triple burger icon on the top left. This is the Getting started link that leads to # Explore. Useful for gaining more follows.

Around October 2023, I started slowly removing bad-faith digital actors (Google, Meta, etc) from my life in a reasonable and sustainable way. I figured I would share it here and see if people had other suggestions. 1/n
I've seen lots of takes regarding threads.net starting federating and what that might imply for the #Fediverse lately (I'll link a few at the end of this thread).
I'd like to discuss and address some of the points that have been raised over and over in one single place:
1. for #Facebook/#Meta this is not really about us fedizens 2. thou shall not gatekeep! 3. block those who don't block (please don't) 4. they can already get our data (not legally, no)
Like the desktop computing experience. That’s what #socialmedia should aim for.
Choice of platform/OS doesn’t matter too much. Plenty of apps to choose from and mix and match. Plenty of user control but also convenience. General functions and paradigms have settled. Data is transferable over time and between computers. Pick performance specs for your needs. Connect to whichever networks/protocols you like, or just work offline mostly.
Next up! The inimitable @jonny. I lauded their thesis in a blog on mind-blowing dissertations https://ideophone.org/mindblowing-dissertations/ (go read it, the thesis I mean) and their feed here offers insights aplenty for academics with an anarchist streak
They're also one of the folks behind neuromatch.social, which looks like a very friendly #fediverse neighborhood where they're experimenting with making mastodon more useful for academics & revolutionising science along the way

What if we'd use these to advertise the #fediverse? Help those unaware of the existence of the fediverse to explore it & experience the Internet as intended.
Use those in-active Twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram etc accounts for some good!

So its done! I finally released a fairly easy to install (from scratch) Hugo based Static Site generator with full ActivityPub support.
It has step-by-step instructions on how to set it up for your own blog or static website.
One of the coolest features for me, other than having your static site blog posts show up as posts in the Fediverse is the support for interacting with those posts. Any replies you leave, likes, or boosts will show up in the "comments" section of the website on the page associated with the post. How cool is that!

It would be good if fedi apps behaved a bit more like web browsers, and pulled posts from URLs to fulfill our expectations. For example when it comes to viewing things like complete threads (while accounting for Mutes/Blocks etc), recent posts in people's profiles etc. Maybe they could also track how often they're doing temp pulls of the same post, and pull it into the account's local server on the Nth pull.
What you're referring to as #Mastodon is in fact the #Fediverse. You see, Mastodon is just one of my possible software projects that interact with the wider Fediverse through a protocol called #ActivityPub. There are many other projects you can use, Mastodon isn't the only one, nor was it the first.

Excited to present the first building block of the BSD Cafe project! When I registered this domain months ago, I envisioned a themed bar where we can casually chat about *BSD systems, Linux, and Open-Source technology among friends, acquaintances, and patrons. But like any bar, discussions can cover a wide range of topics while respecting everyone.
BSD.cafe will be a hub for various tools and services, powered by *BSD.
The first brick is a new Mastodon instance, a gateway to the Fediverse. Registration is open, and the server will be moderated under clear guidelines promoting good behavior and zero tolerance for hate towards anyone. Inclusivity, respect, and constructive dialogue are the key values of this new instance.
The main server is currently hosted in Finland on a small VM, based on #FreeBSD. Services are divided into VNET jails, connected in a LAN via a local bridge. A VPN system is also present and have been able to move individual jails to different, more powerful, machines.
Multimedia data and cache are hosted on another physical server (FreeBSD, within a jail), with Cloudflare in front. The aim is to cache and geodistribute data, reducing network traffic on the main VPS.
Reverse proxy (frontend), mail server, media server, and the instance itself are reachable via #ipv6.
The instance started empty. No unnecessary content was pre-loaded; I want it to grow organically based on users' interests and following. There won't be any preemptive blocks at this stage. Users are encouraged to promptly report anything they find worth flagging.

Dear random #fediverse user, if you create n accounts on multiple platforms and then post the same content to all of these accounts, it will appear n times in my timeline. Which will result in me muting n - 1 of your accounts if this happens a few times. Then, if you post smth important / smart / funny exclusively to one of those muted accounts, I won't see it. So yeah, that toast looks tasty, but maybe don't post it to 2 Mastodon, 1 Pixelfed and 1 Calckey account? :-)

Hi, I'm js and on the Fediverse since 2018. I'm interested in #ObjectiveC, writing #assembly code (in whatever I can get my hands on, from x86_64 to PA-RISC to SPARC64 to IA64 etc.) and any kind of lowlevel hackery, #RetroComputing, #OpenSource in general and decentralization (such as @matrix or the #Fediverse). I'm also into #metal and #chiptunes.
A few projects I am involved in (non-exclusive):
• I created @objfw, a portable Objective-C framework and runtime. Go check it out if you like C and object oriented programming on basically any 32 bit or more platform! • I'm a @fedora developer. • I'm a @netbsd developer, where I mostly work on #pkgsrc. • I'm also a MorphOS developer, where the goal is to switch MorphOS's ObjC support to @objfw. • I used to be a @haiku developer. Technically still am, but am less active these days due to lack of time.

The story: Do you remember back in the days when #Apple installed the suicide nets in "their" factories? That's when I decided I'll no longer buy any Apple products. When my iPhone died I looked around for a more sustainable and/or free (as in freedom) option. So I stumbled upon Fairphone and bought the #FP1 or rather the #FP1u. Soon afterwards I joined the first Fairphone meeting that took place in Vienna, Austria and we founded the @AustrianFairphoners. So I joined the Fairphone community on Dec 9, '14 and it was like a family for me for a long time. In 2018 I was actually introduced to the #Fediverse via the Fairphone forum.
In 2019 I joined #FridaysForFuture and ever since, I'm less active with Fairphone, but I would still never buy another phone and if I get the chance to help setup a Fediverse instance for Fairphone of course I will take it. 🙂

Let's talk governance. On #Twitter and #Reddit, the communities we built were subject to the whims of ownership. As long as we had a benevolent dictator, were were cool. That's obviously changed for both of those sites in the past year, so many of us are here on #Mastodon and the #fediverse
The model is distributed (good) and open source (great) but as the community evolves, it faces growing pains and existential questions like, "What happens if Meta joins?"
Each instance is independent and can do what they wish (cool) but what if the mod(s) of your instance make a decision that does not align with your values? Switching instances can be done but it's a non-trivial task, and you are still subject to the policies enacted by the instance that you switch to. The admin that you _thought_ was cool may hold a viewpoint on an issue that you're not aligned with. You still are looking for a benevolent dictator.
We could of course, each launch our own instance that 100% reflects our values, but that flies in the face of community. My hope is that this is a place that doesn't agree 100% but does disagree thoughtfully and respectfully.
This is where governance comes in - are there any instances with a well defined organization and well-defined processes for how decisions get made? Are there any instances where policy decisions are made by a group (hopefully representative of the users) instead of a single/small group of admins that may or may not be in touch with what the members of that instance want? I'd be much more at ease with an instance like that.
I know that this sounds all corporate bullshit hierarchy and all, but maybe the Fediverse needs some of that in addition to the communal spirit that we have here. I'm kind of tired of benevolent dictators.
I'm also a music nerd and #HotSauce lover and recently got back into the habit of reading #books. #VideoGames are also something that is dear to my heart.

For all of the newcomers from the #TwitterMigration and #RedditMigration, welcome! That being said, please make sure to engage with those you wish to follow. I understand that some might be a bit apprehensive to do so given the experience whence you came, but most of us won't bite and are pretty friendly.
Personally, I'm more willing to accept, and follow, folks who not only provide an #introduction or multiple #introductions, but also show engagement with others on the #fediverse. Even if you don't have an avatar configured but are positively and constructively engaging with others, I'll accept and even follow.
However, if all I see when I visit your actual page for more information is a blank avatar, no posts, and no basic info about you even after a number of days, chances are that I'll be very hesitant to accept. 👁️ #psa
Please, don't just block/suspend bad accounts; report bad actors whenever possible.
Of course, this isn't always safe. But it really helps us admins if you check the rules of the server the offending user is from and, if they are violating those rules, forward a report to that server.
It's the only defense we have in many cases. We don't see private messages. We can't monitor all accounts' profile contents. Even with 100 moderators, continually auditing all old accounts is unsustainable.
So help us out by making sure we know about the bad stuff before we get defederated.
As someone who's on #mastodon and the #fediverse at large for politics, it would really mean a lot to me for people to #boost the posts of mine that they like and agree with so that they can reach as wide an #audience as possible. This isn't to sound vain or anything, but I genuinely want to shift thought and a lot of my #toots are with that goal in mind.

Currently, #fedifinder checks around 100k Twitter accounts per day for linked #fediverse accounts.
/users/:id/following returns 1k accounts per request. 500 requests per day. That would be enough without any other changes than paying for basic access tier.
/2/users (aka lookup) only returns 100 accounts per request, but could be scaled by using cached results and allowing users to check their followings from the Twitter data export. 500 requests means 50k unique accounts per day. 1.5M/month.

It’s not enough to simply block bigots. I’m tired of folks telling me to just do that, as if that makes the problem go away. Would you close your eyes when you’re under attack, and pretend that the attack has stopped?
Telling a #minority to block their online attackers is no different. Stop telling us to ignore our attackers.

I've been on the #fediverse since the beginning of Nov 2022, actually. This is a new profile on a new instance for me because I've been having a rough go of it lately, with instances run by #bigots and #islamophobes.
It didn't at first when I tested it today, but after seeing that the old version (https://fedifinder-v1.glitch.me/) works, I gave it another try and it went through. Down to 538 from 617 accounts. Will have to look into what happened with the rest (deleted?).

It seems to me that even the id of some post is different when I open it from my instance website, and from the original instance website. I was trying to think I could maybe just copy the id and try to force it to load somehow.

I'm making an ActivityPub server for distributing transit alerts 🎉 The tool is completely open-source and fetches alerts from GTFS-realtime Service Alerts feeds
Forget about work, and even if you're single and rich, it's only possible to concentrate on one or two games at a time. Games today are rich in content, no longer something we beat and then move on to the next game. It does indeed eat our time.
I used to place SecondLife, too, until they banned my account because they want me to pay for something that I didn't use.
My current game is #GuildWars2 and #Ultima7 / #UltimaVII. I used to shuffle between GW2 and #StarTrekOnline, but the latter upgraded their GPU requirement requiring a certain feature that I don't have, unfortunately.
#Neverwinter is also a game I play, but I'm not a regular player. The thing I don't like with Cryptic patches are: always 1 GB and above, and slow.
While #Quaver is my relaxation game. It's an open-source rhythm game, like #Osu, #O2Jam, and the likes.

I'm not even sure if Legend of the Red Dragon was a good game. It was a time and place. The community and feel of those BBSs in the 90s. In a way it kind of reminds me of the feel of the fediverse now. Small communities loosely stitched together. I'm not sure how to recapture the gaming aspect of that though.
Made a web based protocol handler for a custom activitypub link URI scheme.
The aim of this is to demonstrate a method for allowing users to follow other people's accounts and interact with other people's posts in a much easier way.
Installing the handler allows you to open up special links anywhere on the internet that will load other people's posts and profile directly into your own instance's web client automatically (no more copy and paste).
Looking for folks to test it out and send feedback.

@eskensaskia noch was unabhängig vom Inhalt des Artikels: Ich finde es auch die richtige Priorität, die eigenen Inhalte in erster Linie auf der eigenen Homepage zu veröffentlichen und dann von Social Media auf die eigene Seite zu verweisen. Es ist zwar auch schön, wenn ("Exklusiv"-)Inhalte" hier im #Fediverse entstehen (und dann evtl. auch in der Presse zitiert werden würden), denn alles, was hier öffentlich gepostet wird, ist ohne Beschränkung, ohne Anmeldung und trackingfrei öffentlich zugänglich. Habe leider schon oft gesehen, dass politische Inhalte exklusiv auf kommerziellen Plattformen veröffentlicht wurden und dann sind sie auch ohne Account gar nicht oder nur über Umwege (#Nitter ) öffentlich zugänglich. Aber die eigene Homepage sollte m.E. die Basis sein.

Nummer Elf habe ich dem #Fediverse ja auch noch nicht vorgestellt. Er ist im Februar geboren und ein Sohn von Nummer Drei, der Einzige aus drei Würfen, der in der Gegend blieb. Schon als Baby guckte er ganz selbstbewusst in die Gegend, mittlerweile ist er ein stattlicher Eichkater. As a bird site refugee, I’d love to share my personal #introduction for the people in the #fediverse. In short, I have a passion for a better world. I believe fixing things on Earth is a better bet than attempting to terraform alien planets. I believe #Science is our best invention so far and #Reason is our best hope for understanding. And I believe in #Consensus over #Controversy. I hate #Racism, #Bigotry, and #Nationalism. My opinions are to raise awareness, but also to help keep my sanity.

Post script: after thirteen years in the cultivated space of #Twitter with ~ 1,500 followers, my contribution to the #fediverse is gaining 100X traction with 1/20th the number of followers.
I don't doubt there are winkles to be ironed out here, yet there is an inherent leveling-up that is clear to discern.

1) How do I get my own #mastodon /server? I am not a sysadmin. There is 2 routes to this.
a) a managed hosting like masto.host. ➕ very good for no technical experience. web server cost is built in. somebody else is doing all the maintenance ➖ it does cause a bit of a centralization, very few reputable options so limits the options to move.
At which point, I'm very pleased to (re)discover the existence of #OpenSource social media ecosystem. I'm reading about the #Fediverse on wikipedia. I start looking at servers. And I'm thinking about intentional communities and being a grown-up who's balancing work and play and being human in a public forum. And I'm also concerned about governance and funding and hardware location, because that's how I role. If it's a potential problem, I will worry about it (at least a bit). 11/N

Why?
Mastodon is a bunch of islands that can talk to each other. The smaller and more spread out we are, the easier things are to moderate. Horizontal scaling FTW!
All of you who fled that one site 🐤 ended up at mastodon.social for likely a few reasons. It was obvious, it was big, and it's where you saw a bunch of folks going.
But it has a long history of being poorly moderated, which means a LOT of instances are silencing or blocking it. Which means you're on the big island that SEEMS like it's "where everyone is", but in fact, it's a giant island unto itself (momentarily trending toward turning into a post-bird-site echo chamber), and huge swaths of the Fediverse don't talk to it, or even see it.
If you want the quality of interaction (and moderation!) Mastodon is known for, move thy funky buns to a smaller instance of cool folks you enjoy.

My humble hint for #educators settling into the #fediverse: *Build a diverse network. *Follow people unlike you. *Follow and unfollow with ease.
** Innovation flows through networks and often the really novel ideas will flow in from the 'weak ties' that you build. **What will often kill innovation is immersing in groups who are 'like us'.
*Be open to strangeness.
The openess of the #fediverse will help you do this. And, the ideas you bump into will flow through you into your classrooms.
Not a #disinformation / #misinformation researcher by any stretch, but I imagine that the architecture of the #Fediverse means that intentional Malinfo gains less traction and moves more slowly here than on large, for for-profit systems.
Why do I think this? For-profit media is all about rapidly going to scale and so rely on algorithms for moderation--the same algorithms which are tuned to maximize eyeballs to boost ad sales. Any real moderation is overwhelmed by spook psyops, state propagandists, social engineers, svengoolies, and charismatic charlatans that drive engagement which drives the chosen business model.
The Fediverse, on the other hand, is (at this point) built from a grass-roots model. Moderation is in the hands of individual servers. And yes, I do expect to see the Fediverse seeded with lots of servers run for profit and for misinfo/disinfo purposes in the near future. It will become harder for grass roots servers to keep them at bay.
I look forward to seeing the research on this presented at #DEFCON 31 by someone. 😉

There are people who had problems using #fedifinder. Not everyone knows what a CSV is or where to find the import. But I have a solution: Follow buttons!
If one or more #fediverse handles are identified on the profile of the person using fedifinder, they can now toggle on follow buttons to get directly to the follow request on their own instances. This should make it much easier.
(At the moment they only work for mastodon instances. I am open to pull requests for other software.)

Again a new tab opens with his instance. This time there is no follow button, but the info, that he already follows that account.
The #fediverse is like a big house, & servers are specific rooms. You can hang out in the knitting room (local timeline) & never explore other rooms, or you can look thru every room in the house (federated timeline). Even if your friends aren't in the knitting room, you can still add them 2 your group chat & just text in the corner (home timeline).

@randomwalker the whole point of a #fediverse is that these decisions don't need to be global. If an instance wants to do #quotereplies or #algorithmic feeds, someone can 1. submit the code and 2. decide to enable it on their instance.
if such features are submitted as required features instead of optional, you are more likely to fork #Mastodon than to get these changes into the core, so tread carefully

I am currently looking through the #fediverse software options to find more URL patterns of profiles. Here is what I have at the moment. Most of them are easy to detect. But for pleroma I saw some servers with and some without the @ in the username. Makes it harder.

Not really new #introduction. actually, I am fairly recent to the #fediverse and #federation in general. But I am going to reintroduce myself so here goes.

One thing that I realised is making #twittermigration harder for people to switch is because the whole concept can feel daunting & overwhelming for non-tech savvy people.
With Twitter to them it was straight forward and easy to find topics they enjoy but with mastodon its a bit different. So if you're new to mastodon or you want to introduce someone to mastodon here are some tips, useful sites & tools: ### Tips: - Choosing a home instance isn't as importance as it seems, don't overthink it. Yes moderation rules & policies may differ but they all have one thing in common: Be a decent human. You **always** have the option to migrate your account to a new instance. - Toots (or posts if you think toots are cringe ) are what we call micro-blogging instead of tweets - You’re supposed to "boost" AKA "reblog" toots that you like.Since Mastodon does not have an algorithm that surfaces toots that have been liked a lot, boosting is the best way to help spread stuff that you like, and to show appreciation. (credit to @orsvarn for this comment) - Another way to fill your timeline with content you enjoy is to: Find other people with similar interests, follow them, favourite their posts, boost their posts, use hashtags. rinse, repeat. (credit to @garry) - If you ever feel yourself getting sucked into arguments on the #Fediverse, you might want to take advantage of the instance mute/block feature! Instances tend to foster a culture, so if you find people from a specific site tend to be bothering you, muting/blocking that instance will keep other members of that community from bothering you as well. - Finally do not share private/sensitive information via DMs on Mastodon. Direct Messages are not E2E. **Keep it in mind**

like probably most people on #oldbytes (that's the instance I'm on) I'm into classic-computing and everything "retro computing". I was a teen in the 1980s and grew up with several computers of the era, namely the VIC-20, ZX81, C64, Amiga and Atari ST before moving to the PC and eventually being enlightened by the FOSS and Linux community.
For a living I'm working as a Linux platform engineer, for fun I delve into the depths and mysteries of 8 and 16 bit computing.
I also run two classic bulletin board systems #bbs, a Linux based MBSE system named "Wintermute BBS" and the infamous "RC-BOX", the world's first and (currently) only bulletin board to run on a #rc2014 homebrew computer.
I'm not a political activist but consider myself 'old fart left' since I am an old fart and have a left-wing opinion - it's been this way all my life.

Let's unlearn! I am no expert. Was reading a lot of your toots about fears, apprehensions, plans and anxiety about this, so I thought I should also put my thoughts up. Let's talk about it.
Some of us have had really bitter experience over Twitter and that makes us colour this platform. Let's not carry the twitter experience here. And make a fresh beginning. And not make rules of what is to be done. Let's be open to new things. We unconsciously tend to bend towards our past experiences. So without coloring things into black and white let's make use of this wonderful platform in as many ways as we can.
Don't be afraid of doing things. How do you decide on what it is and how it works without messing with it? So let's do whatever we like. Let's make mistakes. Let's try new things. Things we always wanted to do. Things we couldn't do. Things we are good at. And literally anything. And let's also not resist things here. Things coming to Mastodon is good. We need flavours. We need news. We need scrap. We need peace. What to follow is always an option.
Hey people. The ones who follow me and the ones I follow. This is a new thing for most of us. Let's figure this out slowly and gradually. Let's do stuff. Let's not see what someone else is doing and start doing the same. Let's not make trends. Mastodon is an open ground and let's make different things out of it. I don't think there is any standard practice that we have to follow. Lets figure this out from scratch.
I wrote a script to find out from which instances the accounts I'm following are and of which platform types these instances are. It uses the list you can export from the Mastodon settings. Platform detection is ugly and probably buggy but I don't know how to do better, if you have any tipps let me know.
