Prediction: Glasses with metal frames too thin to hide mics and cameras will become the only choice for those whose work and relationships are built on trust.

Facebook/Meta are now demanding a monthly fee from owners of Facebook Pages to post links to outside sites:

socialmediatoday.com/news/face

The monthly fee Meta are demanding for posting links on Facebook Pages is quite astonishing:

US$50 per month for 8 links
US$150 per month for 20 links
US$500 per month for unlimited links

This is many times more than the cost of running your own website, cloud and social media server all put together. Independence is much cheaper and better.

Surprise

Report: "Meta briefly disabled ads on the Facebook page of Brazil’s leftwing president on Friday – just days before he faces a far-right challenger in national elections."

But it allows paid posts calling for the military to ‘take back power.'

Pres Lula da Silva's campaign has filed an appeal & is awaiting explanation.

An interesting conflict between a Dutch media creator Roel Maalderink (together with Bits of Freedom) and Meta regarding Meta glasses.

The guy made a video wearing the glasses outside the Meta office in Amsterdam.

The video showed several Meta employees reacting negatively to the glasses, and even asking multiple times if he was filming (showing that even they couldn’t see if the glasses are active.)

Instagram took the video offline, which is the first time this creator had a takedown of one of his videos.

I hope this goes viral beyond The Netherlands.

Edit: Added a Fedi post by Roel himself.

With Meta’s launch of “Muse” on September 8, 2026, consumers are pushed further out of the loop. Just one step closer toward losing control over their own lives.
This clearly undermines consumers’ IT security and raises unresolved liability issues.

techzine.eu/news/security/1444

At the same time, Amazon is trying to ban Muse agents from its platform, because they would ruin the “customer experience” due "bypassing the personalisation Amazon has built into" 😅

Meanwhile, a Polish minister asks the @EUCommission to impose a fine against of ridiculously low €250 million. Maybe he forgot one or two zeros there? 🤦

Tweet by Krzysztof Gawkowski in Polish which reads machine-translated to English: "Digital platforms must be fully responsible for their actions and therefore I have applied for a penalty of one billion zlotys on the Finish Line. After analyzing the materials, including those received from Meta, as well as subsequent media reports about the lack of control over the published content, I have just sent the European Commission a formal request to punish the platform with an amount of 250 million euros. Inaction and ineffectiveness in combating advertising and fraudulent content harmful to Poles will not be tolerated. I expect the European Commission to quickly carry out the proceedings and impose a penalty. There's more to the evidence. I also call on the Meta to immediately introduce effective tools to eliminate scam, fake advertising and promote illegal applications. The wild west on the platform has to stop."

For those following 's $17bn settlement in California to avoid conviction for harmful platform design, has an excellent commentary:

“The settlement reaches the features of Meta’s platforms but not the engine that drives them. Meta earns nearly all of its money from . Young people’s attention is the inventory it sells. Design that captures and holds that attention is not a flaw in the business model, it is the business model working as intended. -->

@thenewoil Thinking that Meta would choose to keep users thoughts/emotions read only would be naive.

If their AI's can access and read users emotions, they can use their outputs to influence emotions, as Meta's much cruder 2012 study showed.

That pales in comparison to what would be possible now.

The importance of transparency in what the algorithms show you and why has never been more important.

Unplanned walk through Waikiki today stopped at Meta Lab storefront. Massive crowd on the sidewalk moved in and a guy set up a velvet rope in front of me. After all the VIP were let in, the person at the door apologized for the wait. I was the 3rd public person let in and got myself some canopies they were serving. It was hilarious to me since I was a sweaty mess from my walk with all these VIP dressed up for the event. Saw only two people that I assume were buying.

🤯 Instagram is testing new iOS push notifications that include a profile photo. Each time the notification is shown on your screen, it triggers a GET request to fetch that image, letting Meta track every on-screen impression.

The app still misuses push notifications to send detailed device analytics about the device (uptime, battery, volume, locale, timezone, memory, CPU, etc.)

From the why-is-this-even-legal category: Meta has quietly added facial recognition code for smart glasses to its app. The feature, called NameTag internally, can reportedly identity people captured by the smart glasses’ camera as well as alert the wearer when it recognizes someone (We’re guessing this would often be used to avoid them). Okay maybe we have to wait for the judgement itself as the Court's press release kind of leaves it open if the Court has assessed the question whether is a CPS or if it stopped with finding the EC has not sufficiently assessed this.

In which case the EC could try again.

@ilumium@eupolicy.social

Oh my that was not on my bingo card today:

The EU's General Court says Meta's isn't really a under the because has made changes to its business user functionality which the EC didn't properly assess. The Court also confirmed that designating Messenger as a gatekeeper was correct.

So kind of a half-win half-loss for the EC but I fear this will make the EC even more over-cautious and DMA enforcement even weaker. 😬

Hackers found a simple way to infiltrate high-profile Instagram accounts...they just asked AI. Meta's AI support chatbot helped hackers access the accounts of Sephora, the Chief Master Sergeant of Space Force and Barack Obama's archived White House profile.

Hackers Simply Asked Meta AI to Give Them Access to High-Profile Instagram Accounts. It Worked

The exploit shows the extreme risk of offloading technical support to AI.

From the story:

From there, the video shows the attacker told the bot to link the account in question to a new email address, after which the bot dutifully sent that address a one-time code that allowed a password reset."

Two big Optician chains in NL, Pearle and Hans Anders, are happily advertising Meta's surveillance glasses. Next time I'll get my glasses at eyewish.com/ or lens.nl/ instead.

Of course you may say: "if there is demand, how can we blame them for selling, isn't that just capitalism?". Taking my business to whoever makes choices I want to encourage is valid under capitalism too, though.

It's easy for them to count their profits on these products, while lost business is harder to measure. So I guess we should be telling them. Social media is a start 😊.

Wow I know et.al. do some creepy stuff to find out about us. (Google "shadow profiles" if you doubt). But their Instagram app just did something truly weird. It just recommended to me a person who was a childhood friend OVER 50 YEARS AGO. I haven't lived there in 51 years. He no longer lives there either. He currently lives 5 hours by car away from me in a different state. We have had no contact since we were kids. We have NO friends in common. We have no common interests that I can see from his Instagram or Facebook. (In fact, based on some media accounts he follows I doubt we would be super friendly as adults). I literally only knew him because he lived like 8 houses away when I was a child and we went to the same neighborhood church. We just played with Tonka trucks and G.I. Joes together. Kind of dumbfounded at this. Is Meta buying former residence locations from data brokers and matching up people who lived in the same neighborhood as kids? A bit of a reach and really demonstrates how creepy their surveillance infrastructure is.

@brian_greenberg@infosec.exchange

A 20-year-old from Chico, California, accomplished what Senate hearings, congressional subcommittees, and parent groups have tried and failed to do for years. She persuaded a jury that Instagram and YouTube were designed to keep kids hooked, and that this was done on purpose. The jury awarded $6 million in damages, with Meta responsible for 70%. What really changed the case was internal emails showing the company knew what it was doing and kept going. That is the most troubling part, not just the verdict.

There is something important that has not been said clearly enough: this case was not about content. It was about design. The algorithm, the endless scroll, and the timing of notifications were at the center. For 30 years, Section 230 has protected these companies by treating them as neutral pipes. Now, this jury decided the pipe itself is the problem.

Hundreds of similar lawsuits are waiting in line. The first federal trial is set for June in San Francisco. For the first time, Zuckerberg took the stand, which probably means we will see more moments like this. Meanwhile, the plaintiff’s attorney used a jar of M&Ms to show the jury what $415 billion looks like. Was it corny? Maybe. But the jury got the point.

Tech companies have survived every regulatory threat by waiting them out. But juries are not as easy to influence.

Landmark L.A. jury verdict finds Instagram, YouTube were designed to addict kids

‘Issue ownership in the online campaign for Dutch general elections: A topic modeling approach.’

Abstract text: Online political campaigns are often opaque, among other reasons because political parties often target their advertising to specific groups. Therefore, it is challenging for citizens, journalists, and academics to understand what political parties talk about in their campaigns, diminishing the public accountability of political parties. Through the lens of issue ownership theory, this study explores which issues Dutch political parties advertised on Meta during the 2021 national election. The study uses a relatively novel topic modeling process that is meant to limit human bias. We built a model that assigns issues to each ad (based on the ad text), creating a dataset of ad-issues matchings. The study is one of the first to present insights into the issues Dutch political parties communicated about during the national elections of 2021. Our findings show that issue owners are not the biggest advertisers on their issues and reveal that private gifts enable some political campaigns to claim ownership of many issues.

Text from article: The cases against Meta, Twitter, and Google were losers from the start, and the courts seemed pretty clear on that. But both Meta and soon (if not already) ExTwitter will “settle” the cases funneling many millions of dollars directly to Trump. It’s hard to see this as anything other than a pathway to corruption. Presidents can just sue media properties for not handling things the way they want, and then the companies all “settle” the cases, funneling millions of dollars to the President. This settlement doesn’t just erode trust — it weaponizes distrust. By framing platform moderation as political favors rather than policy decisions, it undermines the very concept of content governance. The real free speech threat here isn’t the initial ban, but the creation of a system where access to digital public squares depends on paying political tribute. The implications here are staggering. Even if you charitably view this as mere appearance of corruption rather than the real thing, we’re watching the creation of a dangerous new playbook: Presidents can now use frivolous lawsuits as leverage to extract millions from tech companies, while those companies can effectively purchase political protection through “settlements.” The next time you hear Silicon Valley leaders talk about defending democratic institutions, remember that Meta just showed exactly how much those principles are worth: $25 million, paid directly to a presidential library fund...

@ZhiZhu@newsie.social

"Let’s call this what it is: a racket that would make Tony Soprano proud. The playbook is classic: file a meritless lawsuit, make veiled threats (like suggesting prison time), then offer “protection” in exchange for payment. The only difference is that instead of a local restaurant owner paying to keep their windows intact, we’re watching a giant hand over $25 million to avoid future “problems.”"

IF THAT'S NOT ENOUGH FOR YOU AND YOU'RE READY FOR MORE...

Let's say you're following a hashtag but not seeing a lot of it. This mostly happens if you're on a small instance, rather than a large one.

But we can fix it!

We'll fix it using Fedibuzz, a hashtag aggregator.

Let's use "monsterdon" again.

You take your tag, and add it to the end of this URL:

https ://relay.fedi.buzz/tag/

In this case, that gives you:

https ://relay.fedi.buzz/tag/monsterdon

Copy that into the search box (without the space), and hit enter. You'll see a special profile come up, with a Follow button.

Click on the follow button.

Done.

You still need the tag subscription, but now you'll see more. Enjoy!

🚫 Defederation Threads 🚫

As a reaction to the announcement of Meta from yesterday, I have decided to defederate Threads on mountains.social.

The video announcement and the more detailed information on The Verge (theverge.com/2025/1/7/24338471) made this ultimately an easy decision.

I simply cannot justify to federate with an instance, which explicitly says targeting minority groups is allowed (from which many of them call the Fediverse their home).

I will suspend Threads per Sunday January 19th. This will give people the time to migrate away from mountains.social, without losing connections with Thread users. In case you want to migrate and have issues, I'm happy to assist.

But, with all the recent fuckeries about AI profiles, sketchy content and the cherry on the top, the full endorsing and usage of the Trump administration to leverage the avoidance of the stricter (and thank the gods for that) European laws against hate speech, harmful contents and whatnots in social media, we took the decision with a heavy heart to save our users and de-federate completely with Threads.net

3/ 🧵

@innkeeper@gamerstavern.online · Reply to The Innkeeper

When Threads started federating we knew that sooner or later something bad would happen, but we decided at the time to go for a mild approach and just limit the federation.

That mean that no posts from Threads were available from the get-go in the Federated timeline and following an user would require to know the handle.

We decided to do so with our users in mind, to give them the chance to broaden their home timeline

2/ 🧵

@innkeeper@gamerstavern.online

Hey adventurers!

Get ready for a thread(s).

With all the recent heat about Meta and seeing that the company decided to fully take advantage of a pretty much fascist political party to leverage their own needs, after a peaceful discussion the staff at The Gamer's Tavern decided to de-federate from Threads.net effective immediately.

I was formerly on universeodon, which I really liked. However, I did not agree with their policy regarding and . kolektiva.social appears to be blocking them at the instance level, which is my preference. I have been following a number of kolektiva.social accounts for some time, and though my personality hinders my being very activist, I do feel comfortable being an ally for many issues.

My particular policy interests concern women's free access to full healthcare options, including abortion if needed, voting rights and access to voting for all. I very much support US engagement with EU and boosting Ukraine by sending what they need in military supplies, and in time for rebuilding their country. It is obvious to me that Putin desires to reestablish the Russian empire by swallowing Ukraine, and as many eastern European states as it can, from south to north. Finland, Sweden, the Baltic States, down through Poland and Moldova are in his sights. I don't mind calling myself Liberal, though Progressive may be a more sweet and mild term.

I curate my TL with a view to reading informative posts, though I often enjoy the humor that comes my way.

I've mentioned many issues, so let's end this thread with some proposals!

By order of importance:

1. Keep the officials on the non-corporate Fedi! We need them and their instances
2. (Fund/help) work on granular so people can be protected by default and choose when they want something sent to threads.net
3. (Fund/help) work on what cannot provide: people-first tools to curate their feeds (e.g. customizable filters)

And to all those who already do, thank you, you're amazing!

Hello @hachyderm !

I'm moving here from social - I'm a long-time user (since 1998) and @fedora contributor, and recently became a @debian maintainer as well.

$dayjob is at which unfortunately causes additional friction with the old instance since launched; they pay me to contribute upstream and basically make Linux distros work better for us and for the community; can't complain there.

I'm a transplant - originally from

@rolfvanroot@mastodon.social

I did fall for the initial hype of App.

But it's a copycat app from . It will be plastered with ads soon.
My feed is full of celebrity postings and engagement-baiting posts.

Now all that sunk in. Maybe time to re-focus on using more :)

Announcing Free Fediverse, a website resource for all of us fighting to save our communities from absorption into surveillance capitalism!

There are lots of stories, thinkpieces, links and statements flying around and disappearing quickly, and it would be handy to have a place to store and reference them all. Free Fediverse is that place.

Free Fediverse is a wiki-based site linking to resources of the following categories:

- Links to and information on the FediPact

- Essays on the Meta threat to the Fediverse

- Articles on P92 in mainstream media outlets

- Announcements from instance admins on joining the pact

- Links and information for development projects beyond corporate enclosure

- Articles on Meta's many crimes against humanity

Free Fediverse will continue to be updated. Just hit me up to suggest a link for any category. More links to FediPact instance statements are very welcome!

The website has no ads, trackers or analytics. Ferdi the Free Fediverse Froggy sez "hop on over!"

@quokka so I wonder, are you also planning to block any other instances that don't block ? I'm seeing what I would consider some pretty hostile comments and posts to that effect.

@quokka@scicomm.xyz

Regarding the position of scicomm.xyz on and in the Fediverse, etc.

After discussion between myself and the other mods and considering the views expressed by the people on our instance we have decided that pre-emptive blocking of Meta is warranted.

There is more detail on the background and explanation of this decision in a post on our companion site, here:
about.scicomm.xyz/doku.php?id=

Thanks to our people for their comments and suggestions to help us reach this decision.
